Default Old Cd changer to new HU problem

I have the Kenwood MPV622 HU, and a Kenwood KDC-603 CD changer. The CD
changer plugs in fine to the HU, but does not work. The CD changer is from
1995, and the HU is new. In the manual, it does state that CD changers
prior to 1998 will not work with this HU. The changer will play a CD, but
none of the functions work, such as track advance etc. They do make adapter
plugs, but the plug type does not fit in the changer. The adapter has a
square and a round end. My HU and changer both have the round end. Is
there a trick for making this work? Thank you in advance.
