Default Behringer ECM8000 / Apex 220 measurement mics...

They look almost identical (aside from the color), and the prices are
almost the same, but from the PDF datasheets, there are a couple spec.
differences:

They may or may not be made at the same factory, but they use the same
capsules.

Apex-

freq.resp.= 20Hz-20kHz
sens.= -63dB +/-3dB (0=1Vmicrobar 1k)
imp.= 250ohms +/-30%
S/N= over67dB
SPL max= 105dB (for 1%THD@1k)
noise= 24dB (A-weighted,IEC268-4)
voltage= 15-48VDC

Behringer-

freq.resp.= 15Hz-20kHz
sens.= -60dB
imp.= 600ohms
voltage= 15-48VDC
gold plated XLR connector
(missing specs weren't listed)

All of these numbers are meaningless bull****. The frequency response
is just a range without any tolerance. The output impedance is NOT
600 ohms on any of these mikes... 250 is probably more or less accurate.

The graph curves "look" about the same (20-20 flat, with a smooth dB
or two lifted around 10kHz)

The curves are not to be believed. They are made-up values and may not
actually reflect any particular unit.

Note that there are two different versions of the Behringer mike, which
sound very different... one is transformerless and the other has a
transformer. You want the transformerless one but there is no way to
tell without opening it.

Anyone here familiar with the two, or know a reason to pick one over
the other? One thing to note, is that I was thinking that if it sounds
OK as a cheap, clear room mic, I may add a second one for dragging
around to do stereo recording (band practice,etc). Don't know if that
would make the Behringer easier to find later on, but I think I may
have a Yorkville dealer here too.

They are almost certainly from the same source. This doesn't mean they
are the same mike, any more than you can expect two Behringer mikes off
the shelf to be the same mike. But for this kind of money, who cares?

Any idea on whether that dbx one is from the same
family. Can't help but wonder, as it's listed as $100 or
$150.

I don't know about the dbx. I know that Crown and
Josephson make low-cost measurement mikes with the
Japanese capsule that the Behringer unit has
a copy of, and the calibration on the Crown and
Josephsons is good. They are both in the $100 to $200
range, I think.

What's the model numbers of these mics?

The Josephson is the Series 5. I think the Crown is called the CM-150.
