Default Q on Sound Card: Performace difference or Problems for 4-Channel vs2-Channel, When used for Recording Music from a Tape Deck

Q on Sound Card: Performace difference or Problems for 4-Channel vs 2-
Channel,
When used for Recording Music from a Tape Deck
================================================== =========

I wish to install a PCI-type Sound Card on my computer and then use it
for converting music from Cassette tapes to Digital format (Total
Recorder software)

I found two model, using ES 1938S chip. One has 2-channels ourput
and another model, which has 4-channels. I assume that the 2 and
4 -channel difference is only for the output.

Can some members please tell me if the 4-channel item may create
problems
or may have lower quality sound for Line-In jack

Thanks

Unless you actually identify the board(s) you found, we can't really
help you.

In the absense of any information about specific cards, as a generic
question: the number of outputs has no correlation with the quality
of the line-in circuit. Also no correlation with the kind of source
(cassette deck, etc.) or the intended application.

Not enough information to answer your question. There is much
more to evaluation of a sound card than merely the type of chip.

There really shouldn't be a quality difference. The real question
might be what about the sound card (or chipset) that you already have.
Most modern sound cards likely have better performance than the
majority of cassette players. Also, why do you want to use ES1938S
chip anyway. It is quite old and posted test results are quite poor:

There are much better choices available than this chip.

I think he's referring to a generic audio interface based on the circa 2002
ESS 1838S chip.

I actually tested one of these back in 1999 and it wasn't too wonderful:

Actually, it was pretty horrid, which was par for the course way back when.

I'd recommend a Behringer UCA 202.

Thanks everyone.

Things are bad at ESS-land. Will Buy M-Audio's Audiophile 2496
