Potential buyers may want to check first with church organ maintenance
firms (look in your Yellow Pages) for availability of AO amps locally,
as well as the drive requirements. As I recall the Allen tone source
put out something like 8Vpp at full swell deflection.

I appreciate the drive info - maybe I should reconfigure the first tube
section for more gain.

People looking for vintage McInstosh, Fisher, etc. should check with their
local Salvation Army first, right?

I gave away a Fisher amp and tuner. I was overwelmed trying to move
and was clueless to it's worth. I wish I could find a McIntosh at the SA
store with a $20 tag on it! I do still have the little "Hi-Lo filter
system" that went with the set and I still have the speaker.

In 1986 anyone looking for tube home gear would indeed have been
advised to check with the thrift shops. However, they figured out a
long time ago anything with tubes besides an old TV is likely valuable.
Desirable collectibles get filtered out efficiently by most of these
operatiions today.

The AO amps are not home audio pieces and are not likely found at
Salvation Army stores, nor at home stereo places, but are still
_commonly available_ through the appropriate pro channels at
_reasonable prices_. Many people like them for home audio use, but only
if they themselves are sufficiently technically inclined to get them to
work properly. If you are in an area with a lot of churches and not too
many DIY audio people it's likely you could save a pair from the
dumpster for a reasonable price.

Other organ goodies include some Kinsman and Schober amps that are
really thinly disguised Dynas, McIntosh amps out of electronic
carillions, and a few Estey and Gulbransen units that use amps
integrated into the tone chassis that aren't that great but which have
the desirable Ercel Harrison-designed Peerless OPTs. The big payoffs,
though, are the third party or DIY tone cabinets many churches bought
to expand their installation. It's by no means unheard of to find
McIntosh, Marantz 9, Altec triode, or custom-built exotic amps and JBL
and Altec drivers in these.
