Default water protection for amp

the most obvious solution is.....

DONT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!

polyurethane (like industrial plastic wrap - you can get scraps from contractors) or waterproof foam. you could put it underneath and around the sides but dont cover the heatsink. you really want to make sure that you have air around the amp so it will dissipate heat. again why a lot of manufacturers are going to smaller processes which generate less heat. (look at blaupunkts PA4100, farenheits ultra slim line, etc. so it allows for more flexibility in amp mounting location) most installers will put an amp under the seat but it is generally easier not to. I personally dont reccomend it unless you have an amp that can still perform in low air volume situation - wont overheat as easily. or, a smaller vehicle design that dont allow you to put it anywhere else.

i aint saying dont do it, but see if you an try something else instead.

I'm 90% sure now that I am going to have to mount my 4 channel amp
underneath my drivers seat. I ran down to circuit city to buy the
wiring I need, and I have already ripped out my old amp, my old head
unit etc. Then it dawned on me ...

Last year, I had just gone to a gas station, and got one of those 44 oz
cokes. I set it down on the floor in front of me, and somehow it tipped
over and the entire contents of the coke wound up on the floor. It was
literally a small pool of coke, It took me an hour to clean it up.

But what if this ever happened with my precious new amp mounted to the
floor right underneath me? Is there a way to protect it so that liquids
could never hurt it?

"Mark Zarella" seesigfile says...

Yeah. Don't mount it under the seat.

I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone would mount an amp there.

Yeah, last night I decided to get creative with some of the high density
particle board I had laying around. Here is what I came up with for
mounting the amp in the trunk:

http://www.mikesims.com/nissanstereo/

Each pic is 250k in size ... if you need it smaller, let me know.

I screwed the mounting plane into the fender well. It also butts up
against the top structure of the trunk, forming an extremely sturdy
mounting surface. It doesn't move at all when I try and force it. I
think it will hold up nice for a long time. At some point, I would like
to paint it, but for now, I don't want to remove it from the trunk, as
it was a bitch getting it in there.

I did the exact same thing except behind the rear tire well. it worked out
ecellent and i put some rubber washers on there to prevent vibration. it is
rock solid and i great way to display the amps you are using. it is also
easier to tune them in that location, than mounting them ontop of a
enclosure ot on the rear seatback.

Sweet! Got the Civic like mine! Looks like a 96-00 model, though.
Mine's a 94 DX Coupe. Currently I've got nothing in my rear deck, as
my 3 JL 10W3's blew through the Pioneers' surrounds that I had in
there. Looks bad with two holes, but I guess it's just a stealth
install right? :-) How do you solve that problem, or are your
Blaupunkt's able to keep up? I didn't see any subs, do you use a tire
well box? Thanks for answering my questions.

Funny you caught that. YES, I had those concrete screws in my toolbox
now for 4 years. I finally had a use for them, as I could not find any
sheet metal screws short enough to do the job. It was 11 pm, and there
was no way I was going to find a place open to sell me the "right"
screws.

Actually, It's a 1995 Nissan Sentra ... :-)

The Blaupunkt's are going in the trash, unless I have at least two that
are not blown already ... they will go in for rear fill.

Actually ... here is the sub, and the box I built for it three weekends
ago:

http://www.mikesims.com/nissanstereo/IMG_3376.JPG

The sub box is too big for the opening of the trunk. I have to remove
the spare tire, and work the box in without the tire in place. Then, I
have to have someone else hold the box up while I put the spare tire
back in.

And here are the new amps, and the new speakers (Diamond Audio M661
components):

No problem ... I'm having a blast!

Thanks!

Wow, those trunks are eerily similar!

So you don't think you'll have the same problems as me? (Surrounds

NICE!! What is that, a 15? I'm always partial to Kicker, since they're
about 75 miles down the road in Stillwater, Okla. (I'm in OKC). I'm
wondering how you're going to do it when that spare tire becomes
necessary :-).

Nice looking amps, never heard of the brand (not that it means much
coming from me). You like their output, or was there another reason
(gift, price, etc)?

I will set them lower, but I might just run out and purchase some better
speakers for the rear fill. My Blaupunkts blew because the amp I had
was rated at the same wattage as the speakers. When I cranked the amp,
the distortion at that volume blew the speakers. This time, I am
driving the speakers with an amp that is rated higher than the speaker.
That way, when I crank up, I will not push the amp into clipping, and
theoretically, the speakers will produce nice clean, loud audio.

It is a Comp VR 15! Big Fat Grin

I was considering carrying a 12 volt air pump, a can of fix a flat, and
a plug kit ... between the three, I should be ok, unless the tire shreds
from the wheel. BUT, I will have the spare with me, so I should be able
to jimmy the spare out of the trunk if necessary ... I'll practice and
make sure.

I decided based on specs and recommendations alone. In another post,
someone in here recommended them to me. I have not heard any of this
equipment yet.

I am currently having a hard time running the wire into the side doors.

Drama!

Thanks Again!
