question- why is the efficiency rating on those JBL's less than my
dept. store bought Technics speakers, which are stamped 93 db/w/m ??

The efficiency is primarily determined by the woofer and LF cutoff.
Also, you speaker rating may actually be a misrepresented
if the impedance is lower than 8 ohms. Many are 6 ohms.

hmmm...these are 8 ohms, 15" woofers, 3-way speakers w/bass reflex,
circa 1986- but back then, Technics made some really good speakers, for
a short time- these look almost identical to those JBL's

they sound quite good driven by my Akai M8 reel used as an amp

L-100 use a 12 inch.

thanks- now it makes sense.

funny thing- I vividly remember the salesman trying to talk me out of
buying these larger speakers- the amp was rated at 110 WPC, and the
speakers rated at 200 wpc, and he was saying the amp would clip trying
to drive those speakers- it was a real crock of BS- good thing I didn't
listen to him, as now these speakers have been tied to a SE tube amp
for the last 2 years- without the high efficiency, I don't think they'd
work as well as they are now
