Default Side address pencil mics?

If you look at this video around half way through
or so, you see what look to me like a couple of
small diaphragm condensers - what must be recording
the lute I suppose, but looking as though they are
pointed up toward the ceiling.

I was thinking that someone didn't get which way
to point the mics, or they preferred the of-axis
response for some reason, or they are side-address
mics of the like I've not yet encountered.

I await your collective wisdom.

Thanks,

Tobiah

But why not side SDC ? There are plenty.

Looks like a Schoeps MK41V head.

The lute works. The mics are fine. But the leather pants? Totally
unsuitable.

Oh and the added delay and reverb? Just horrible.

Omni's seem unlikely if they are actually using those stage monitors.

Those Schoeps are hyper cardioid.

The mikes look like Schoeps MK8 figure-8 microphones in the video.

As far as I know the only small diaphragm condensers out there that actually
work well are the Schoeps MK8 and the Sennheiser MKH30. And to be honest the
MKH30 doesn't work as well as the MK8. It is very, very hard to make a small
figure-8 condenser capsule.

I was thinking that someone didn't get which way
to point the mics, or they preferred the of-axis

There are some other pencil-shaped figure-8 mikes like the Royer
ribbons and the Audio-Technica AT4081. With a figure-8 mike, both
the front end back halves have to be symmetric as possible so that
sort of arrangement makes sense.

There are some cardioids too, like the Audio-Technica ATM50 microphones.
Putting the capsule sideways like that means the back of the capsule is
more open and there is nothing blocking rear vents. On the other hand,
it makes it harder if the capsule has side vents. Which some cardioids do.

Schoeps makes a side-address cardioid capsule, the MK4V, and I think the
main reason they sell it is that you can use it with a microphone with an MK8
and mount the two parallel to get an M-S configuration.

I found the Japanese lyrics a little disconcerting to be honest.

But the MK4 can also be used parallel with an MK8 for MS - with both barrel
bodies pointed end on at the source. (Let's call that's 'horizontal.)

Such an arrangement is arguably easier to point than that of the MK4V situation,
where the two parallel mic barrels would be vertical. These two set-ups will
differ slightly on issues of "sound-blocking" or "arrival-time...as would also
be the case with the 3rd possibility: an inverted L-shape with horizontal MK4
/vertical MK8.

That's true, and that's a lot easier in a boom, too!

Indeed.
