There never was a bust; only a bubble that caused people to think
they "lost" money they never really had OR to spend money they never
had.

The cool factor is that the 401K tax deferral thing makes wealthy
people out of commoners. I personally know of many telephone
operators who started in the 60s, were encouraged to save 10% of
their salary from the start, moved into management jobs (the Bell
System companies always chose first line managers from the ranks)
and with the help of pensions, ESOP and 401K retired as
millionaires. Only in America.

This is anecdotal.

IME it's factual.

Poverty and median income have hardly budged since
1973, despite the fact that there are vastly higher labor
participation rates for women and increases in two-parent households.

So what? Where is it written in stone that these indicators must improve?
What things have happened in the past 30 years that would tend to force
poverty up and median income down?

This is because of the enormous increase in inequality, so that
despite growth, the gains have gone largely to wealthy households.

I think you just contradicted yourself. You just cited statistics that
suggest that there has been no real growth, and then you claim that there
has been real growth.

There was some improvement of these measures during the 1990s despite
soaring inequality, but those gains were wiped out in the current
recession, when poverty rose.

And the statistics proving this claimed increase in inequality are where? I
don't even see any convincing anecdotes. I see zero support for the claim
that inequality has increased.

As for the bubble, many widely held stocks are indeed lower than they
were before the bubble--AT&T, for instance. If you bought it before
the breakup into the regional bells you would have done well, but not
if you bought it after:

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=T&t=my

Where is it written that a given line of business, such as those pursued by
AT&T will remain consistently profitable. If you actually followed business
periodicals, you would have no doubt seen many references to what AT&T
management did wrong since the break-up. Are you saying that even though the
management of a company makes significant mistakes, the profitability of the
company should remain constant or grow?

The hysteria after 9-11 had everything to do with it.

Compare August 2000 with August 2001, August 2002 and

It retrospect it was a great opportunity. I came to know Vietnam civilians

Did I mention that I also worked full time night shift at the Press Plant at

Quite frankly you deserve a round of applause for managing your
finances so carefully and with so much discipline. But I think there
is a limit to how much can be extrapolated from your case. Many
people were indeed hurt by the recent stock market collapse. In part
this was because of mistakes made by those with less financial acumen
or prudence than you under newly liberalized 401k regulations. But it
was also because of misstated earnings, dishonest stock
recommendations, phony revenue bookings and other forms of fraud by
telecom, technology, and brokerage and mutual fund companies, the
exectives of which have been steadily coming under indictment and
successful class-action prosecutions. The tech bubble was an enormous
ponzi scheme, and many people were in fact fleeced.

Separately under the Bush administration there have been continuous
job losses, which have still not stopped:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/24/opinion/24KRUG.html

New unemployment claims are still running at 400,000 a month, which
means that the number of jobs is not growing.

In "Saving Private Ryan"?

You'd have to ask Tom Hanks. He should know for sure about both sets.

Which movie were you talking about when you said "the same movie set"?

George,

I was alluding to the conspiracy theorists' claim that both the
holocaust news reels, and the moon landing news reels were hoaxes
created by Hollywood producers for the US goverment. Seems our young
Frenchman buys into the former, anyway. I don't give him enough
credit to think he's teasing.

Oh. I see you've been reading in some of those places that our friend
StynchBlob thinks are sources of Real Truth.

It's hard to make an accurate guess at how foolish Lionella really is.

I've been expecting him to weigh in here, anytime now.

Was it you who sent the flowers to Gregipus? Originally I suspected it
was one of his co-workers because the prank hit so many of his
buttons. So I figured it had to be somebody who knew him well. In case
Gregipus hasn't mentioned this, he has claimed that his fellow
salesdroids at Simply Stereo looked up to him as a master seller, went
to him often for advice, turned over the toughest customers to him,
etc. I assumed these claims bore an accuracy similar to the claims of
omniscience he makes on RAO. So it's quite believable that one or more
them know he's a horse's ass.

But if it was you, congratulations -- it worked like a charm.

That was a stroke of genius, but I can't take credit for it. However,
I later accomplished some very nice work in emails by asking him if he
would like me to sign him up for the Dildo of the Month Club, and have
them delivered to Simply Stereo!

They used the same movie set to film the "death camps"

In "Saving Private Ryan"?

My dear Hooded-man, I hope that you are not be obliged to make a special
for text explanation for Middius each time you are joking.

Seems our young Frenchman buys into the former, anyway.

Young Frenchman ? I bet I'm about 10 years older than you.
You should pay attention.

I don't give him enough credit to think he's teasing.

Do you prefer to give your credit to Middius ?
You have done the good choice he has already proved that he perfectly
understood your jokes...
LOL !

I hope you aren't serious.

You hope well. Thank you to be confident. :-)
I *hate* history remakes... all of them.
This was just provocation for our hooded friend Dogma4e.

Go in peace, Lionel! But first, do tell us you were joking about
death camps being a hoax.
