Hello all, I am seeking to make a list of vinyl records that are at
least in-part untrackable by most, if not all turntable/arm/cartridge
combinations. Records not trackable by the Finial or LT would need to
be marked as separate for this category only. I will recommend 2
items here and I hope other add vinyl listings to this thread. Both
of these are Jazz in this post but I have a classiccal Claudio Arrau
recording on Desmar that I will add later. As a side note in doing
some research for this post I ran across a recording I mentioned in
an earlier discussion. The record is of Heitor Villa Lobos conducting
his own compositions "Bachianas Brasileiras N0. 7, and "Choros No. 6"
both for Orchestra. It is on the Turnabout Vox Historical Series THS
65002.

The first two discs I list as partially untrackable are

#1 Sing Records 532 "manufactured and distributer by the Official
Record Company APS, Copenhagen, Denmark" made in 1988 using master
tapes from King Records for a King records disc issued in 1956. The
title is "Dame Dreaming with/Bill Doggett"

this is a superb pressing of the Bill Doggett Combo standards, but
unfortunately the sax parts are cut so "hot" on the European pressing
it is like a tes disc to see how well your cartridge is capable of
tracking.

#2 Mercury EmArcy Jazz Series EMS 2-401 "Dinah Washington The Jazz
Sides". Again the sax parts on some of the songs are so
overmodulated this can become a test disc to test cartridges. The
recordings were made between 1954 and 1964 and issued then, but this
disc was "reissued" in 1976 as the Mercury item listed above.

and i have a Audio technica A8008 micro line that can track it in a Phase
Linear 8000 turntable

There is a Nonesuch recording of Bach Concertos for Multiple
Harpsichords that is difficult to track AND trace in the high
frequencies. Play it with a cartridge with poor HF tracking or a
misshapen stylus, or a stylus rake angle that's way off, and the
plucking of harpsichord strings sounds "spitty." Nonesuch H-71019.

You could try Klemperer's first LP recording of Beethoven 7 on
Columbia 33CX1379, which despite being mono seems to be largely
untrackable in the last movement. Although I've long had a suspicion
that the cut was faulty....

Having myself cut discs I can tell you that it's not difficult to cut
something unplayable, indeed part of the art of cutting is to make
discs which are as hot as possible but don't blow up the cutter
(excessive treble) and don't exceed playable limits (excessive bass
and midband). And of course even 'as hot as possible' is something of
a trade-off between distortion (short of catastrophic distortion as in
mistracking) and level.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I have a record
manufactured by Shure specifically to test trackability. It's No. TTR-101
and was produced by the Development Engineering Dept. to show off their V-15
Type II "Super-Track" cartridge. One side is in mono, the other in stereo.
There are test tracks repeating the same recording of a single instrument at
increasingly higher levels, pushing to expected untrackability in some
cases.

Selections include:

Mono:
Orchestra Bells
Drumroll and cymbal crash
Blank anti-skating band
Bass Drum
Silent grooves

Stereo:
Phasing check
Electric Organ
Piano
Accordian
Harpsichord

Bill Balmer

Solti/CSO Mahler 8 on London.
End of side 1 is very difficult for many rigs.
