Last straw with MD...
OK... my MD has stuffed me around for the last time. I missed another
important (stealth) recording last night because I couldn't get the damn thing to record without putting on a performance of my own. I am urgently in need of a replacement and I'm not keen to go down the MD path again. Would someone please be kind enough to bring me up to speed on some viable alternatives? I've had iPod-like suggestions made to me but I really don't know anything about this, i.e. brands, general functionality/ease of operation, storage/recording capacity, ability to cope with (or auto-adjust) for loud or vast fluctuations in volume. I would want said device to have a normal 3.5mm mic socket. Please suggest away! Thanks in advance. |

The only issue I have found with MiniDisk is their susceptibility to condensation if brought from the cold into a warm room. I rather doubt this was your problem this week :-) Apart from this, if you can't work your MiniDisk I rather doubt you'll be able to work any alternative unit. |

be able to work any alternative unit. Thanks for your comment, but you've misunderstood me. I am perfectly capable of operating the unit. The unit is now old and incapable of itself operating reliably. |

Of the competitiors, many of them do record. For all music players, there are 2 types, RAM or flash based players and hard drive based players. RAM/flash based players offer extreme ruggedness. They will not skip, you can drop them, etc. Disadvantage? Relatively low capacity. Nowadays, flash based players have about 8 GB capacity. That may be more than enough for what you may need and depends on how much quality you need to record in. If you need the utmost quality then a 8 GB flash player/recorder will give you several hours of recording. Hard drive based players offer stupendous capacity. 80 GB of storage capacity is not unheard of. You could record Bach's entire Sinfonias in the utmost quality. Dis-advantage? They are not as rugged. You would not want to drop it several times. May be one or 2. If you're the type never to drop your player then maybe this choice is for you. As for Brands, I would look at iRiver. Hope this helps CD |

I have an 80GB video Ipod, got one of these, http://www.xtrememac.com/audio/earph...cromemo_video/ and I've been getting some surprisingly good recordings both from the supplied omni mic and its line input. It's not a pro level piece of gear but considering I'm in for less than 500 USD and it plays all my CDs and videos I'm not looking too hard for anything else. It's possible to set the recording level yourself but the auto leveling seems to work fine for what I've done so far. There are at least two other plug-in/on recording modules for the video iPod, http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/italkpro/ and http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=277661 I got the XtremeMac because the mic is on a gooseneck as opposed to being fixed into the module. |

But Apple's previous history of restricting this, and its continuing obsession with "rights" rather than utility make me recommend any brand OTHER than iPod unless you're a fashion-victim teenager who sources all your music online. |
