As I recall (I worked in a Lafayette store as a kid and sold tons of this
stuff) In its prime, it was unbelievably cheap crap.

"Criterion" was a house brand that covered a wide range of speakers that
went from small crappy speakers to large crappy speakers. Every once in a
while they'd come out with a model that sounded pretty good. Accident, I

I also worked for them in the mid 70's and sold audio. I think that it
isn't fair to say it was all "cheap crap". Given the pricing at the
time and the amount of "low fi" stuff out there, the Lafayette stuff
was a very good first component stereo system. The LR100 is okay. If
you like the way it sounds, that's all that matters. And by the way,
the thing is still working, isn't it?
