Default AM/FM Tuner - Ant. hookup help needed

I have recently aquired an older model Technics AM/FM Tuner. I do not
have the manual.

I need a bit of help in properly connecting the AM and FM antennaes as I
have never owned a component stereo system before.

Please find below a pic of the back of the unit.

I don't have the antennaes to hook up -- I'm going to have to buy them,
so please be specific on what I need.

Thanks all.

Well you could buy carefully designed antennae but why not try a simple
solution first, assuming you are somewhere near your FM transmitter.

For the AM just try connecting a piece of wire a few metres long to the
'AM Ant' connection and string it up vertically behind your curtains.
That will probably work. If that's not enough and you have a radiator
nearby then put a wire from the GND to it.

As for FM, you could use a simple dipole about 1.5m long on the 300 ohm
connections of the tuner. Use twisted bell flex, unravel about 75cm
from it and string them out like this:

---------------- -------------------

twisted bit

Tuner

Mount the ends horizontal if your local transmitter is horizontally
polarised, vertical if vertical. Point it with the transmitter in front
or behind, not at the ends of the dipole.

Have fun!

Thanks, Phil! That was very helpful. }:O)

I would like to know, though, exactly how the GND works? How is it
different from the other ANT terminal(s) for AM and FM?

The picture of the back of the unit no longer shows up at that link.
If it's an older enough receiver it has phono (record player) inputs
and that ground terminal may be for the green wire coming from the
turntable. If so, it will screw right into the metal of the
receiver's chassis. If it's "paired" with the AM antenna terminal on
an insulated backing like plastic, then you can hook a long wire to
the AM terminal and another wire from the ground terminal to a good
ground such as a cold water pipe. Use insulated wire with enough of
the ends bared to go under the terminal screws and to connect the
other end of the ground cable to whatever you use as ground.
As for the FM terminals you should be able to get what's called a
folded dipole real cheap at any place that sells consumer electronics.
It's made out of what's called twinlead, the flat stuff that used to
be used to connect TV antennas before the round stuff your cable
company uses became widely used.

Okay.
basically, for FM, you'll need a t-type antenna with 2 screws which goes
on the 300 ohm bit. The AM is a loop antenna (don't know where to get it)
which connects to the 2 AM screws. Of course, if you have a rooftop
antenna, you could use that

just my 2 cents
