Head Unit advice
I am looking for opinions about a new HU. Here's my situation...
* Playing primarily FM radio and ipod, could possibly use CD but ver rare. Don't need mp3 or satellite radio. * Must have aux input capability * Will use amps from the HU * Honda Civic with infinity speakers in front and pioneer's in back * Prefer an "accurate" or "revealing" sound with natural level of bass * Slight preference for rotary volume Basically, I need a HU with a good amp section, a decent tuner, and a aux in. Nothing else matters. Prefered price $400. I am currently leaning toward a Pioneer DEH-P3500 or Alpine CDM-9803. These are both very cheap, but stepping up several models does no change any of the three features I care about. Any opinions about which is better (better sound, more durable, easie to use, easier to install)? Are there other HU's I should be considering given my requirements? Head Unit advice
I can't say much about alpine because i've never owned one but i like
the pioneer units alot. If you go pioneer though ussualy i'd say go with the premier pioneers. On most premier versions they have higher voltage preouts (although on this model the preouts are only 2 volts for both units but the premier verson has a rear front and sub out while the regular pioneer one has only 2 sets of preouts), and a 2 year warrenty instead of 1. But there's not much difference between the premier and regular version on this model. Pioneer is a great choice if you are willing to learn how to use it, there's so many features that can be confusing at first, it has a built in 3 band parametric eq in it that's definetly helpful, a SFEQ that allows you to adjust it to the contours of your car, you can adjust the bass and treble on the front and rear speakers diferently, and it has an EQ-EX that has 5 preset eq curves and one custom curve along with adjustable q's on the parametric eq. It also has a an on/off for the sub with an ajustable low pass crossover for the sub along with ajustable level that is -6/+6 db. You'll need the seperate aux cable that is like $20 though. Hope that helps. - Scott -- shutout31 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CarAudioForum.com - Usenet Gateway w/over one million posts online! Cant go wrong with an Alpine. I have had a couple and love them. Also I dont
know if Sony still makes the ES series with rotary knobs or not but I have an older one that I still use in one of my cars and it has 3 sets of 4V preouts and an aux input and a nice large rotary knob. Just get anything but AIWA. I heard bad things about their long-term
durability and scoffed at what I heard. Then I got one, and it won't read CD-RWs worth a crap after about 6 months. Pioneer and LVC have some nice sounding decks within your price range. Anders |

Head Unit advice
Clarion - built in aux inputs - RCA pigtail on back of unit.
Alpine - aux capable, need a $15.00 adapter. Kenwood - aux capable, $20.00 adapter Pioneer - aux capable, $30.00 adapter JVC - built in front panel aux input, minijack type Both the Clarion and JVC allow input level sensitivity adjustments, which helps alot with portable devices. Many do not have a line out or have low power headphone outs. Since you plan on using the HU to power your speakers, I would lean towards the Alpine or Pioneer. Both have the higher power ratings, and I personally think the Alpine has some of the best SQ available. Keep in mind that the units that require an adapter cable to provide an aux input will negate the use of any aftermarket CD changer. Some have some more expensive adapters that allow both, but I do not think they are particularly cost effective. I like the 9803, considered getting it myself, as I have no use for MP3s either. I eventually decided on an open box Clarion 535 from theZeb.com. Price was right for me, and I figure I can live with it over the Alpine for now. Since I have external amps, the internal power was not a big factor for me. -- Sneezer ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CarAudioForum.com - Usenet Gateway w/over one million posts online!
