Default Dual monitors on 98SE?

I have an old Dell P III that I run Win 98Se on because of some legacy
software. I have an extra VGA monitor.

At my day gig (government lawyer -- don't ask) I just got a second
monitor. Now I want to add a second monitor at home to my old PC.
Internet sites seem to show this is possible with 98SE (I may need
another video card. My work IT guy said flat out 98Se will not support
dual monitors.
Is anyone using a dual monitor set up running Win98Se?

Did you add a second video card or did you add a dual card? Were
there stability issues afterwords? My PC is tweaked for audio.

I have added CD burners, swapped out hard drives and added memory and
PCI cards and dug down into the BIOS to resolve problems but I have
never looked into adding a second monitor and now the system is
obsolescent at best.

Google returned 23,400 hits for: windows-98 dual-monitors
I suspect that somewhere in the first 20-30 hits you will find
not only your answer, but the info you need to implement it.

98SE will definitely run 2 monitors- my old system was set up that way,
great for running Logic. I had an ATI PCI video card with 2 outputs. THe ATI
software had all sorts of extra stuff with management options for 2
monitors. My later AGP ATI cards did the same. I'd imagine an older card
would be available on Ebay pretty cheap.

He's wrong.

You can do either. I have 2 cards in this PC. Obviously one of them has to go in
a standard PCI slot that way and it can be tricky finding PCI video cards now
unless you use an old one.

I did see a quad display card once btw.

Out of curiosity, Graham, what are the two cards?

There's plenty of received wisdom around that running multiple monitors
off separate display cards wasn't supported before XP, and I don't think
I've seen or heard of anyone running a 98 machine that way, before now.

To the OP,

I ran with a dual-output Matrox G400 card for years, under 98 and XP,
have seen them in use on plenty of computers, and have no hesitation in
recommending them.

As it happens I installed a couple of quad-output Matrox cards at work
today, onto XP PCs. Without a hitch.
