Impedance Probs
Hi,
I've got a relatively old stereo system that has surroundsound outputs, but it has them labelled as 16 ohm. I'm guessing I'll be doing damage (over-currenting the amps) if I use 8 ohmers, so can I use a pair of 8 ohms in parallel or will that cause problems too? I've been trying to find 16 ohm speakers but they are not cheap and very hard to come by. Can anyone suggest anything? Sticking an 8ohm resistor in line with it one 8 ohmer?? James |

A pair of 8 ohmers in parallel will get you 4 ohms, so you don't want to do that; hook them up in series instead and you'll get the 16 ohms you need. Putting an 8 ohm resistor in series with an 8 ohm speaker is OK too, but you'll waste half of the power out from the speaker than if you had two identical ones of them in series. -- John Fields |

Coyoteboy:
Many (non DTS 5.1) stereo pro-logic only surround receivers..... (you failed to mention your Make and Model number)....... have only one rear channel amplifier even though there are two sets of rear surround speaker terminals. You can verify this by disconnecting one of the rear surround speakers, if the other one stops producing sound then you have verified the fact that it has only one rear channel amp AND that the rear speakers are automatically connected in series inside the amp wiring...... so since 8 + 8 = 16 you do not have a problem. Next time your post a question like this please be certain to ALWAYS mention the make and model number of the equipment you want to get useful replies for....... remember, we can not see your receiver, nor are we mind readers, so we end up guessing. I hope that my reply helped.... and answered your question. -- Best Regards, Daniel Sofie Electronics Supply & Repair ------------------------------ "Coyoteboy" wrote in message ... We really need brand and model info. If the model specified 16 ohms, it may
actually have one amp cicuit for the surround running two speakers in parallel. Silly I know, but at least one Pioneer blow-line model I've seen did this, even though that series of amps was lucky to run ONE speaker without blowing up. Mark Z. -- Please reply only to Group. I regret this is necessary. Viruses and spam have rendered my regular e-mail address useless. "Tomi Holger Engdahl" wrote in message ... Doh, cant believe I wrote that - I meant in series - late night brain pause
I think. The unit is a UK Aiwa NSX-D55 for future info. Seems like a really nice unit. Think I'll get hold of some 8 ohmers, just asmall set of cubes or something and have 4 surround speakers instead then. Cheers all who replied James |
