Zoom H2 adn bad SDHC card
Last trip to Austin I stopped in at Fry's to buy another 4GB SDHC card
for the H2. They were out of brands I recognized and I bought a cheap WinTec card. It doesn't work. Spikes in the audio will show up somehwat randomly, but frequently enough that there will be several within a three minute song. I've given it two chances and that's cost me the board mixes from two shows. I'm going to stop in at the Best Buy close to where I'm staying this trip and pick up another couple of SanDisk cards, which seem to work perfectly. Just sharing a heads up. I didn't get what I thought I paid for. -- shut up and play your guitar * http://hankalrich.com/ http://www.youtube.com/walkinaymusic http://www.sonicbids.com/HankandShaidri |

I found a couple of really good 16G SDHC cards, different brands, on sale for around $20 - forget exactly - but way below what they normally go for. Two different office supply stores. Look for it. I get Kingston 16GB SDHC Class 10 cards for $20 at the computer store. Better than the class 6 Sandisk IMO. Far better than the cheap, slow generic ones for not much less $. Trevor. |

Gary Eickmeier I have a 32g Lexar Platinum in my H4N, it seems to work fine and cost only a little more than the 16g in the same brand. MJRB |

Is there a similar routine in your recorder and would it have picked up those faults? -- ~ Adrian Tuddenham ~ (Remove the ".invalid"s and add ".co.uk" to reply) www.poppyrecords.co.uk |

Maybe the card is just too slow, although audio recording makes very modest demands on cards. Did it have a speed marked on the card or the package? |

I found a couple of really good 16G SDHC cards, different brands, on sale for around $20 Well, don't bother to send one to Hank. The H2, unless it's been updated and I haven't been paying attention, is limited to 4 or 8 GB cards. I haven't bought any new cards for my H2 in a couple of years. I'd been buying the Micro Center house brand cards that they sell at the cash registers, but I find that I've been doing what I said I didn't want to do when I first got into recording like this. Initially, I wanted to save the cards as original recordings, searched for and found a reasonable storage system for them (difficult, since it seems that everybody else wants to just copy recordings to a computer and re-use the card). Now, I delete just about everything I record fairly soon (don't even save it to another drive) so there's no point in saving the cards. -- "Today's production equipment is IT based and cannot be operated without a passing knowledge of computing, although it seems that it can be operated without a passing knowledge of audio." - John Watkinson http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com - useful and interesting audio stuff |

I didn't get what I thought I paid for. What class are the suspected bad cards? Class is usually a number between 2 and 10 that is in a circle on the front of the card. I ask this, because I have found that some Class 10 cards can misbehave badly in equipment that is not designed to exploit them, and some of the failures I've observed correspond to your comments. Put a Class 10 card in a piece of equipment that is designed for it, and it can be a joy to use. |

Thanks, Gary. SanDisk 4GB cards are just right for what I do. That gives me over 4 hours at 24/44.1 and I don't need to store more than that in one run with the H2. They're quite cheap right now at Best Buy. -- shut up and play your guitar * http://hankalrich.com/ http://www.youtube.com/walkinaymusic http://www.sonicbids.com/HankandShaidri |

Didn't lose anything I'll cry over. If it's critical I'm using the MIO and the laptop, not the H2. -- shut up and play your guitar * http://hankalrich.com/ http://www.youtube.com/walkinaymusic http://www.sonicbids.com/HankandShaidri |

I didn't get what I thought I paid for. Despite running the card-checking routine which is built into my Tascam DR-05 (as described in a previous post) I have now had a SDHC card fail. It was a cheap "PNY" brand 8GB card supplied by my local P.C.World. They have offered to change it or refund the money. I lost two interesting wildlife recordings, for which there was no backup recorder. The recording appeared to be taking place correctly but I got a 'Failed to save to card' message when I tried to close the file. Both faulty files crashed the playback software after about 10 seconds. On a couple of previous occasions I had experienced bad files being recorded, but both were very short experimental files with nothing important in them. The 'own brand' 2GB card which came with the recorder hasn't given any trouble and I am now experimenting with a Samsung 8GB, which hasn't failed - yet! -- ~ Adrian Tuddenham ~ (Remove the ".invalid"s and add ".co.uk" to reply) www.poppyrecords.co.uk |
