Default 550 / 600 V electrolytics

Very nice vintage NOS Bosch MP, made 1970, new, packed in orignal
sixpacks. Sealed steelcan, grey paint, really "retro looking", well
they are real old stuff. 5.5 MFD at 800 VAC =2200 VDC, perfect for DHT

Out of curiousity, how do you get 2200 VDC from a cap rated at 800
VAC?
Wouldnt the absolute value be 1600 VDC, with 1200 VDC being about the
real figure?

Thanks
Bob Hedberg.
