Toroids, Plitron and Bryston... a Canadian nexus
Hi, Vacuumlanders,
It''s not often that a mass media news item relates to what we like! On Dec 29, 2010, the Canadian Financial Post newspaper lead with an article on Plitron, a Canadian company that makes toroidal transformers, having bought a new coil winding machine from Universal, the US manufacturer. There's a big front page picture, too. See http://www.financialpost.com/SPEND+S...762/story.html Not only that but the article goes on to say that Plitron makes toroids for Bryston, another Canadian manufacturer of high end audio amplifiers that most of us know and love. There's stuff about quality, productivity and investment in process, etc... all good news for NA manufacturing and signs of life in the Canadian sector, too. Nice to hear! Disclaimer: I don't own any stock in, or work for, Plitron or Bryston and, indeed, Bryston stuff is well over my pay grade! Happy New Year! Cheers, Roger |

Cheers, Roger Plitron operates at the top end of the market. They sell very nice transformers. I have power supplies custom designed by Menno van der Veen and built by Plitron which they now catalogue, suitable for powering my 80Wpc SE Millennium End SV572-3 & -10 amp, an amp well above Bryston's paygrade. Between them, I would say that Plitron and Amplimo, who made the matching output transformers, very versatile, are the top toroid transformer makers in the world for audio amplifiers. If anyone plans to spend lots of money on a circa kilovolt broadcast-tube amplifier, I can publish the transformer model numbers again. (There are taps for all kinds of applications both in the power supply and on the output transformers. That's how Menno designed them, to be good as experimental gear.)
