and when using the only one mono mic input when attempting to record
from a CD player or stereo FM radio - - it always comes out in MONO
(yes, we're using stereo plugs!)

Is there an item you can buy (PC Card, USB) to make strereo recordings
like a "LINE-IN" jack?

It's got a headphones INPUT? How does that work? :-)

Yes, you can buy pcmcia, Firewire and USB audio interfaces. Here's a

Note that some laptops have problems with audio recording. Power
supply noise gets in, even using an external soundcard. Sometimes
running on internal battery or lifting the ground on the power supply
helps. Sometimes you just have to accept that everything's been
crammed too close together in the box and you'll never get quality
audio. I hope yours isn't one of these!
