Default Harman/Kardon HK 695 Subwoofer controls

I was able to pick up a Harman/Kardon HK695 Subwoofer only at a thrift
store for a very good price (5 bucks). I would like to use it on a
cheap PC in a back bedroom but don't have the Champagne-style
satellites to go with it.

The two output jacks work fine with other satellite-style speakers I
already have but I can't figure out how to control the Subwoofer
volume. There are two buttons on the right satellite for volume +/-
and mute, but I don't know how they work - how they transmit their
signal back to the subwoofer. The subwoofer is very quiet, obviously
on a low volume, and I can't get it to sound louder.

No big deal, something to fiddle with, but any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill
