Default FAQ: Acronyms: W / RMS

FAQ Title: What do all of those acronyms mean?
Subsection: W

Link: http://tinyurl.com/h6un

Current FAQ definition:
"W is for watts, a measurement of electrical power. One watt is equal to
one volt times one amp, or one joule of energy per second. In a DC
circuit, the power is calculated as the voltage times the current (P=V x
I). In an AC circuit, the RMS power is calculated as the RMS voltage
times the RMS current (Prms=Vrms x Irms). "

Current Proposed Changes:
"W is for WATT. The watt is used to specify the rate at which
electrical energy is dissipated, or the rate at which electromagnetic
energy is radiated, absorbed, or dissipated.

Electrically, one watt is equal to one volt times one amp, or one joule
of energy per second. In a DC circuit, the power is calculated as the
voltage times the current (P=V x I). In an AC circuit, the RMS power is
calculated as the RMS voltage times the RMS current (Prms=Vrms x Irms).
"

With the addition of RMS to the FAQ:
"RMS stands for Root Mean Square. This is a statistical measure of the
magnitude of a varying quantity. It can be calculated for a series of
discrete values or for a continuously varying function. The name comes
from the fact that it is the square root of the mean of the squares of
the values. Audio manufacturers may use this as a qualifier to its
power ratings to show an attempt at a more accurate power rating."
