Default Orchestra Sound Module

Hey all,

I've got a lot of Roland gear (XV-88, XV-3080, XV-5050, Fantom XR), and I'm
looking to compliment the sounds by getting a module or two with better
orchestral sounds.

Yes, I've got all the orchestral plug-in boards for my Rolands, but there
are many, many things missing from the sounds.

For example - Tremolo Cello/Viola/Bass, Trumpet flourishes and toungings,
good sounding muted brass, Solotone mutes, and the list goes on.

What I'm looking for is a couple of rack-mounts that will let me get much
better orchestral sounds.

Can you guys recommend a few that can more faithfully reproduce these and
other orchestral sounds?

Thanks,

Marc

What about a 19" PC running GigaStudio with the Vienna Symphonic
Library?

Decent orchestral sounds require many large samples, and most modules
don't have the room to store them. Though the programming on the Roland
plug in boards is great, the total sample space on a board is 64mb (I
think?), which is less than a single violin multisample on many sample
cds. That's why the sounds can be a little uninspiring.

So, I'd suggest a real sampler of some description and some orchestral
sample cds. You can get what used to be top of the range AKAIs cheaply
nowadays, and they have a big library available. Else, a computer and soft
sampler will do the job.

Thanks,

Marc

Oh for a fanless 19" PC that can be turned off and on like a synth
module, with sensible front panel controls.

The Muse Receptor is going in the right direction, but still noisy and
somewhat inconvenient.

For a rackmount synthesizer, your best bet is a Triton rack with the
Orchestral expansion module. The samples come from the Vienna library.

of course a Gigasampler rig with any of the various orchestral sample sets
will be better, but it isn't a rackmount separate synth, which is what you
asked for.

Garritan Personal Orchestra.

Dedicate a computer to it. Softsynths are the future of orchestral
sample playback. Every sample I've heard in the Garritan library dusts
any module I've seen in the studio for realism.

I'd go with Kurzweil any day. The PC2R with the orchestral rom might suit
you, you should find a dealer and listen to it. Keep in mind that no sample
will fool you.
