My CDs are Less Dynamic Than My MP3 Downloads
According to this tool(image is representative of interface):
http://blog.son-video.com/wp-content...ns-titre-1.jpg In nearly 9/10 cases, the above tool returns a LOWER 'DR' value for the CD vs the old MP3 download I'm replacing with tracks from the CD. I.E. Some old MP3 of a Paul Davis song I bought off Amazon returns a DR value of 12 in Foobar, but both a WAV and MP3 ripped from a 1991 Cool Night CD shows DR-11! What is going on here? |

DR cannot be so easily computed from a data stream like the first two as it extends over a period of time plus is partly a matter of judgement. Not worth worrying about. ..... Phil |

Was the source the same for both MP3 download and CD? I do know Amazon offers both CD and MP3 download, but download has been modified/enhanced, because the earlier CD was never remastered. I like Paul Davis!! Good choice. Jack |

Rambling: You MAY remember The Little River Band. I THINK it's their Great Hits CD. But during an Amazon review, someone yelled, the MP3 downloads do not match the CD!! It awakened my curiosity, so I downloaded a few of the MP3s. What had changed, Capitol, LLC (multi-track) remixed the tunes to new stereo. I won't claim they did an excellent job, but the songs SOUND way different. Why I say you must be cautious what you are listening to. Jack |

Phil So, after someone was ****ed (in usenet)that I never tell what I do to enhance audio, I wanted to dedicate a song to this person. What do I receive? Something like, "you dumb f'k, it should be Joint Stereo, not Stereo"! Always believed Stereo setting offered more than Joint Stereo, though Joint Stereo offers a smaller file, not better sound. True/False? Jack |

MP3 encode decode can lead to overshoots up to 2 dB. Empirically determined. Always leave 2.5 dB unused. Kind regards Peter Larsen |

Thought discussion of those was forebidden in this group, LOL. Well, using my EARS, a lot of the old MP3s do sound more open and snappy than the same track off the CD. That kinda jibes with what the DR snapshots are telling me. |

... What is going on here? Remember all those times when you've boasted that you can't understand numbers, and you can't even add 1 + 1? You've hammered away at that point for years. You hate numbers, and you have no understanding what they mean. You have no idea what the DR value means; you dont know how it's calculated, and you dont know how to interpret it. In your desperate and pathetic attempt to evaluate music by staring at your computer screen, you've failed yet again. The root cause is that you're a retarded dumb ****. Stay away from numbers, l'il buddy. The aren't telling you anything about the music. They're just confusing and upsetting you, and we all know that you can't handle much more confusion without reaching a breaking point. KFSKJ? FCKWAFD! AADFR,OC! |

Musical waveform content missing out of the MP3 ? Some of it, but likely a lot of it has to do with overshoot from the MP3 encode/decode process. That is likely to increase the peak measurement by a couple decibels. Which is why, as I keep pointing out, relying entirely on a peak vs. average ratio is so misleading. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra.
