Default convert Thiel-Small parameters to optimum enclosure volume, & vice-versa?

Is there a straightahead method for determining the optimum volume for
a loudspeaker enclosure based on a particular driver's Thiel-Small
parameters?

And conversely, is there a way to determine the optimum Thiel-Small
parameters (or, really, to select an appropriate driver) based on an
existing enclosure's volume & port size?

And is there a way to determine how a given driver will perform in a
given enclosure if you have all that information?

Not really, because the optimum volume depends on other factors too. Do
you want the loudest possible low end? Do you want the most extended
possible low end instead? Or would you rather have the most tightly
controlled low end?

Again, it becomes to some extent a matter of taste. You can pick a
particular alignment then work back from the box parameters and the
alignment to figure the device parameters you want.

given enclosure if you have all that information?


Yes.

A good introduction to all of this stuff, and one that gives very
simplified plug-and-chug methods, is Vance Dickason's _Loudspeaker
Cookbook_.

Yes, download a free copy of WinISD and try it. You can simulate several
enclosures at once, and if you plot them in different colours, you'll easily
be able to see the difference. I don't know how accurate WinISD is, but it
will give you a feel about the tradeoffs in speaker cabinet design.

What kind of speaker are you thinking of, though? You can't simply replace
drivers in hi-fi speakers without taking into account the crossover..

Now if you're talking about proper speakers, for you use with bass guitar,
that's another matter ... :-)

Seems to me bass guitar speakers , at least in the past, have not always been
made with TS parameters, or in some manner, not used in the proper
way, but may have created a sound which was desirable or not.

Instrument speakers aren't like regular speakers at all, any more than
instrument amps are like hi-fi amps. They aren't intended to be accurate,
they are intended to be interesting.

The SR speakers from Precision Devices ( born of Turbosound ) have T-S parameters
that defy common understanding.

They work well when shoved in the recommened boxes though !

A rough rule-of-thumb is Vas/3.

Remember, I said *ROUGH*. That means that Vas/2 can be as
good or even better in some cases.
