AKG D310
Does anyone have an idea why AKG would have made a D310? It is a very plain,
unremarkable mic that doesn't sound to me like it would be the best choice for anything in particular. I have two of them. |

Since you have two they must at some point in time have appeared to you to be cost-efficient. Some of the time the best choice is something that you can afford to break and that is reasonably sturdy so that it doesn't break too frequently. Kind regards Peter Larsen |

OK, it made sense to somebody to get them. Anyway, they are the cheap one in a range of three mic models, ie. the one you buy if you want the costly one but can't afford it. Also it has a nice low sensitivity and a slightly rolled off (by being on the other side of the presence-hill) treble, both properties fit the suggested use, closemiking of brass, well. A point made in the info-sheet easily found on AKG's website is the sturdy design, ie. it is a stage microphone that has made some quality trade-off's to be likely to also function well on show 100 in the grand tour. Kind regards Peter Larsen |

Because there are people like you who will buy them. And sometimes it's a good idea to have a few mics that aren't the best choice for anything in particular but that work OK on whatever you need to use a mic on. What's bad is if it's a mic that sounds bad on anything you use it on. But I take it that's not the problem. If all you had was special purpose mics, you would be pretty limited in what you could use them on. -- "Today's production equipment is IT based and cannot be operated without a passing knowledge of computing, although it seems that it can be operated without a passing knowledge of audio." - John Watkinson http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com - useful and interesting audio stuff |

I guess you could best answer the question why the hell you bought two of them then. As I posted, I inherited them. That means I didn't buy them. Therefore, your guess is not valid. Thanks for your input, though. |

Thanks for your input, though. His guess remains valid even if it was someone else that bought them. Some of the time there is a place on a stage for a microphone that is solid, cheap and not worth stealing. Kind regards Peter Larsen |
