I picked up a used Fostex D-160 recorder a while back so that I could do
some location recording, then be able to dump into ProTools via the ADAT
pipe. The problem is that the drive that is in the unit isn't large
enough to record 16 tracks for very long. Not a good thing for capturing
a live show. I've tried without success to find where I could find
larger drives, checking both with Fostex, who have been no help at all,
to third party manufacturers. Does anyone know where I can find someone
who makes a suitable drive for this unit? 30 gig would be nice, but I
can even live with 10. Or should I just break down and get another
recorder for location stuff?

The D90 maxes at 8.2 gigs, no matter what size drive. The D160 will run
a 30 gig with update 2.13, with an 80 gig drive which according to Fostex
takes a "hardware update" to go over 30 GB, will fill the drive in around 16
hours of 16 track time, long before you reach 24 hours. The D90 is set up
for one hour not one day. I have a D90, two D80's and a D2424, I've tried
many, many drives on all of them, over the past 8 years for the D90 and
D80's, it's a hit and miss situation getting a not OK'd drive to format and
like Michael says, if it bogs on the format, forget about it, you'll only
have problems down the road. Maxtor bought out Quantum, but the Fireballs
are no longer made. If you are getting all drives to work Enver, what make
and model numbers?

Drives that I've used for the D90 are the Quantum Fireballs, the
Seagates and the IBM's, I haven't tried a Maxtor on the D90, but I bought 8
WD800JB 80 gig drives for my D2424, one wouldn't format, I sent it back and
got a refund. You can go the buy and try route, but I'm warning that it's a
hit and miss chance of finding drives that will format for any of the D
series Fostex that I have worked with. You've already tried 3 different
drives Jhonny, so this may have already become obvious to you, but anytime
that you can, go with the recommended drives, if you can find them.

i've used fireball and fijitsu with no problems. the size depends on what
version you have. i also believe that it only runs at 5400 rpm which are
cheaper and harder to find retail, but plentiful on ebay.....

I understand I need to upgrade the software to 2.x in order to accept a larger
drive. Do you know how I can find that software? I also need to get a hardware
upgrade. Am I getting in over my head or is this doable for a reasonable
expense?

the upgrade was free a few years ago direct from fostex, but they've gone
thru some changes since. i'll try to find you a contact # thru my work.
