Default CD Player With a Digital Playback Memory? (BOSE)

I was watching a Bose infomercial last night and one of the Bose
"surround" systems has as CD player that can copy and store the CD's
music for future playback w/o using the disc again.

Has anyone heard of this? And if so, what company besides Bose - if any
- makes a CD player capable of this?

Sounds like what Windows Media Player, iTunes etc. does on any PC.

And hopefully would never be connected to a Bose product either....

Why not? Is this a religious thing? :-)

The machine that does what you want is essentially a one-program
computer. You already have a multi-purpose one.

Easy accessibility, the facility to create your own play-lists. Not
sure why he's anti-computer for this job. But if it's merely a matter
of inconvenient location, why not buy a dedicated laptop? Its CD
drive will read the data as well as any "hi-fi" unit. You can get one
with a digital audio output. And it's likely to do the job better and
cheaper than anything Bose make.

As you have discovered by now, Bose is a nasty word around here. It is
generally reviled as a pure marketing organization, providing mediocre
technology at premium prices. Anyone who mentions Bose in a neutral or
positive light will get flamed. It pays to lurk for a while to avoid getting
burned.

Who knew? I'm afraid you stepped in it, pal. Please don't take it
personally.

You put a CD in your CD player, somehow the player stores the music,
whether it's on a hard-drive, or some kind of computer chip, I don't
know. Then all you have to do is hit a button(s) for that particular CD
when you want to listen to it and it plays. You never have to put the
CD in the player again. It's basically the same thing as having a CD
changer with 500 (or how ever many it can store) CD's in it but a LOT
smaller.

Be careful. It may be storing in a compressed format. Basically,
you're describing an iPod.

Apparently no one has even heard of the feature.

Also, I have enough computer "problems" w/o connecting it to my stereo.
LOL

And I'm not spending money on a laptop JUST to play Cd's. If there is a
company besides Bose that makes an affordable CD player with this
function I *might* buy one.

I'm just looking for info on it. I can't even find the one Bose makes
on Google.

be a cool feature to have, on another brand of CD player.

I'd really hope that, given the massive differential between Bose's
pricing and the cost of hard disks these days, that they'd be using a
non-lossy compression system (or none at all). 60 quid will buy you a
300 GB hard disk, with enough storage for ~700 full-length CDs in FLAC
or similar format, and 750 GB drives are readily available now.

This is assuming that the design will be sensible, of course...

I suppose you could look at it as a hard disk storage unit with a CD
reader bolted on. But do remember, you already own one.

It does look a seriously nasty bit of gear, doesn't it!
If you drill down to the manual, you find this, which is rather
worrying:

Planning time to store your music

Storing entails two actions: placing the tracks from each CD in a
holding area and processing
the tracks for efficient storage. This frees up the holding area.
While the holding area is !
temporarily full, no more storage is possible. As an indicator, the
media center displays the
message: BUSY PROCESSING CDS.

This suggests compression.

No. I'd bet that everyone here has heard of this feature, but not
implemented in a standalone consumer CD player gadget. The
device you are reading this on (your computer), for example,
already has this "feature".

This is a very common function. People have been "ripping" CDs
for years and years, nothing new. All Bose appears to have done
is to package it into a nice plastic box. Of course that is what they
do best (other than taking your $$$)

I'm just looking for info on it. I can't even find the one Bose makes
on Google.

Hope you aren't under the delusion that Bose will actually reveal
any technical details about how they do it. It is not that kind of
company. From their track-record, don't assume that they are
using any sort of lossless storage methodology. Their reputation
is pretty low around here.
