Default channels and wattage...

If a channel on an amp is 100 rms (lets keep it simple) and i hook up 2
speakers to it, what will the result be? what will the result be if i
hook up 3, 4, 5, ect speakers to one channel on an amp.

This question deals with some Car Stereo 101 type issues regarding impedance
and such. Please check out our FAQ at: http://www.mobileaudio.com/rac-faq/

You will find the answers to your questions and MUCH, MUCH MORE.

Resuts vary depending on the speaker impedence

If the amp is rated at 100 watts rms into 4 ohms and you put a 8 ohm speaker
on it, output may only be around 50 watts rms

More likely to be around 62-65 watts... typical class AB car amp does
not double power when you halve the resistance, more like 50-60%
increase in power.

Also makes a difference how stiff the amp power supply is, how well the
amp can provide a constant voltage output regardless of load.

And, depends how he hooks them up, i.e. serial or parallel.

Mike, we need a lot more info to answer this "simple" question. There's
a lot of variables involved.

the amp in question is ..........Power Acoustik OV2-1600
2-Channel Gothic Series Amplifier......... i want to know what happens
when i wire up mult. (4 ohm) speakers to a single channel... voltage is
stable, a 3.0 frad cap is wired in... speakers will be wired up in
parallel... what would happen if i wired them up in series (speakers on
one channel).... with all this info in mind, im really only concerned
with the amount of power (rms) each speaker would recieve per single
channel from that amp...
good enough? lol...

Mike,

I've found the easiest way to figure this information out is to go directly
to the manufacturer. You might be able to download a copy of the owner's
manual, or speak to a technical rep over the phone. Like e-nigma said,
there's a lot of variables and this SHOULD be your best source.

Mike,
Listen to JD. I'm not familiar enough with all of the pseudonyms around
here to know who's who, but I know who John Durbin is.

If you answer his questions, he will NOT steer you wrong. He's only trying
to help.

You would be wise to start by studying Ohm's law, as that is the theory.
What JD will tell you is what you should expect to hear in the real world.

Good luck,
Keane
