Default yamaha NS-515F

Hi all,

i live in Ireland and have been offered a really good deal on a pair of
yamaha NS-515F. they are new floor standers. some research in this
group suggests not buying speakers from the big manufacturers and to go
with specialist speaker makers only. the NS-515F normally retail at
=80749 here but i can get them for =80560. could anyone recommend
alternatives, can i get better sound for the money?
I want them for music playback, the other pieces in my set-up are not
to hot, some philips seperates that were okay a few years ago. i am
starting the upgrade with the speakers.
any help greatly appreciated,
Hugh.

Hello, Hugh.

This is a very open-ended question. I would recommend going around

and
demoing speakers. Bear in mind that even though speaker X may sound
great in a large, open store, it may not sound great in smaller
quarters. Keep in mind the speaker design per the room that they

will
be going into: for a large room, you would be better off buying

speakers
with a 12" or 15" sub, while if it's a small room, speakers with 6"

or
8" subs would more than suffice. I would definitely do a test-run of

any speaker before I purchased it.

Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to seriously test out

recent Yamaha speakers, so I can't help you out there. On the

average,
their build quality is very good, so keep that in mind.

Michael

Hi Micheal,

thanks for the reply and the advice. i couldn't get a demo on the
yamaha speakers so i have a lend of some monitor audio bronze 4. they
look great and have a detailed high end but the bottom end is not that
punchy. My friend has my c.d. player at the moment so i only have my
laptop to run tests (not a good way to test i know) but i should have
my c.d. seperate back this evening. i am also starting to think that
maybe these speakers are showing up my poor amp!
cheers,
Hugh.
