Default Home imaging Systems

Years ago I was involved with submetering and could not find a used
doppler meter (to measure flow the way Kill-a-watt does electricity)
for less than two grand, yet I recently picked up a ten buck stud
finder that used ultrasound. I can't help but think the software is
the bulk of the difference. I know a chemical engineer who bought a
used heat imaging system he uses to find problems in buildings (he
compares images by time of day and does finite element analysis, he's
even examined gravesites). So I wonder why there are not better
systems for examining beams, leaks and other home problems, and why do
they need to cost so much. Don't night vision cameras use the same
notions as the heat imaging system?
