Default how do speaker enclosures work?

why is it when you assemble speakers into a box that the sound
volume and quality seems to increase? I've always wondered-if you take
ordinary computer speakers and remove the enclosures the sound change
is dramatic. It would really seem that and unadulterated speaker cone
would produce the best, unimpeded sound. I'd like to know because I'd
like to make my own speaker enclosures.
