It's what we do here. Try looking at it from a different point of view. Good advice but I don't think it's realistic. Scooter is being a real drama queen over this issue. The last time he tried out a different viewpoint, he came up with the notion that Stereophile is an instrument of repression against the underclasses. The problem with that view is that he can't make up his mind: On his more manic days, he rails at people whose income is modest for not pulling their fair shares of the tax burden. I wonder how much Scottie has donated for the Katrina victims. A rusted out old car, maybe? |

How many weeks of vacation did you take this year, i.e. how many hours did you actually work this year? How many hours a day do you work, excluding lunch? I AVERAGE 36 hours a week (which is full time in most countries and THEY get 5 weeks vacation on top of that) and I haven't taken a vacation in several years. The IRS doesn't care about that at tax time though. Fortunately for me, being head trainer gives me $4.50 an hour so I've got the best of both worlds. Or super high cost of living. Or "possessions tax" like some states. OTOH, we DO have a high sales tax (regressive, not progressive tax). Here, we only get paid 2.13 an hour, the federal minimum. Except that I'm not much of an ocean guy, as I've said in the past. Now, Apen or Vail, THAT'S the ticket. I could make close to $100,000 a year doing restaurant work there, but then there's that dratted cost of living bug-a-boo again. Frankly, I make just about as much as my counterparts in our California restaurants, EXCEPT, I make a couple of dollars an hour less (I suspect that if I were head trainer out there, it would be more like about $6 less. But I can also easily buy a house for under $100,000 here. This year, I only had to fork out $500 at tax time, instead of the usual $1300 (and before I got my mortgages, it was almost $3000 at tax time). Are finally paying the equivalent due of every man, woman, and child? I don't know. I'm going to make about $40,000 this year. Subtract about $10K for mortgage and charity donations and do the math. I don't have any tricky off-shore accounts or other tax dodges. I pay EXACTLY what the federal government has deemed fair for a person in my situation. Probably less than Jeffrey Skilling paid. Once again, I'm amazed that my personal finances intrigue you so much. |

I had to do some overtime when were were a bit stressed due to some unusual turnover, and I don't mind doing it when asked, but usually, overtime is something to be avoided. Yeah, time and a half isn't squat at 4.50/hour . So you're no longer saying your income level is by choice? IIRC you once said you could make more money and pay more taxes if you wanted to. Your lifestyle and income was by choice...now you imply you're maxed out. Are you going both ways again Dave? So, if you subtract out your vacation/s, I'll bet I'm pretty much right where you are at in terms of "hours worked". Obviously you've never had a salary position. I get paid and taxes get paid regardless of the number of hours I put in. All the company cares is if my job gets done. Basically, I have what you idiots in middle management would call a "flex job". Call me an idiot Dave... but you just said I work less hours than you do, I get paid vacations that you don't, I also have health, retirement and stock benefits you don't, my retirement is secured, and I make a ****pot more money than you do... but I'm the idiot. Ok....ladidah... ladidah. ScottW |

I pay EXACTLY what the federal government has deemed fair for a person in my situation. Who say's the gov has designed the tax system to be "fair"? Probably less than Jeffrey Skilling paid. Once again, I'm amazed that my personal finances intrigue you so much. You're personal finances never interested me. It was your claim that you pay your share and accepting the perception that people of higher income are duty bound to cover your self admitted slacking ass. ScottW |

ScottW Scott, "bigot" has three tees, and "ass" is spelled "as". You deserve the Rose Kennedy award for your fight for rights of the mentally retarded. |

Actually I think more people should know exactly what their share of government spending is so we wouldn't have Congress passing $50B to buy votes with no debate and no amendments. We F'd up so lets throw everyone affected some money ala 9-11. A congressman (who voted no on the bill) just said on the news that every household in America just got tapped for $600. Hell.... I wish that were true. Closer to the truth is 1 houshold in 10 just tapped for $6,000. This after we're begginning to hear about the ridiculous disbursements of 9-11 money. I think I'll apply for my debit card tomorrow (sarcasm people). ScottW |

Oh really? How many weeks of vacation did you take this year, I get 5 paid but I can't bank more than 10 weeks so I can cash in if I choose. So I actually work more hours than you do a year. i.e. how many hours did you actually work this year? How many hours a day do you work, excluding lunch? I'm on salary Dave... I don't even keep track... Well then, you should just shut up then. As far as I know, you don't even average what I average. but, just for example upon reviewing my calendar I had 3 working lunches this week which is pretty typical. Well, I don't even take lunches. Or breaks. And I don't sit on my ass at a desk most of the day either. I AVERAGE 36 hours a week (which is full time in most countries and THEY get 5 weeks vacation on top of that) Euro envy noted. You forget that I've lived AND worked there. and I haven't taken a vacation in several years. I HAVE worked overtime at least 4 weeks this year. And no, I'm not complaining. I COULD take a vacation if I wanted to. I tend NOT to like extended vacations. I only take them when I need to go to Europe (that was my last vacation) or something similar. I avoid the next shift because it would put me in overtime (so that means that I usually only have to work 4 full shifts and a couple of hours of "extra stuff" (admin, special deliveries, etc.). I had to do some overtime when were were a bit stressed due to some unusual turnover, and I don't mind doing it when asked, but usually, overtime is something to be avoided. Yeah, time and a half isn't squat at 4.50/hour . The corporation doesn't see it that way. So you're no longer saying your income level is by choice? IIRC you once said you could make more money and pay more taxes if you wanted to. Your lifestyle and income was by choice...now you imply you're maxed out. Are you going both ways again Dave? Well, I could get a second job if I wanted to. I don't. I'm happy with my situation. So, if you subtract out your vacation/s, I'll bet I'm pretty much right where you are at in terms of "hours worked". Obviously you've never had a salary position. I get paid and taxes get paid regardless of the number of hours I put in. Actually I have. And yes, I fully realize that. That's what makes your harping about the number of hours I work especially ludicrous. All the company cares is if my job gets done. Hopefully, spelling isn't an issue. Basically, I have what you idiots in middle management would call a "flex job". Call me an idiot Dave... but you just said I work less hours than you do, Thanks for confirming it. I get paid vacations that you don't, I also have health, retirement and stock benefits you don't, my retirement is secured, and I make a ****pot more money than you do... but I'm the idiot. That's right. Ok.... Glad you agree. |
