Default compatibility of car audio system

I was told by local (New Zealand/Australia) car audio installer that
the FM radio of car audio sourced from U.S market is incompatible.
Although FM frequency range is the same, it can only receive one
station.

Hardly I can believe this.

It is apprently that local installers have great interest to say so
since they are selling the same units at a much higher price.
Appreciate your comments.

Some can be switched. It's just a selector between 200KHz and 100KHz
channel spacing.

I've noticed that home receivers for the US market are crippled so they
can't use RDS. Weird. RDS is used in the US too.

I just purchased a Pioneer car stereo (DEH-P4650MP) and both the AM and FM
band can be switched between the USA frequencies and Australian Frequancies.
ie (AM 9 and 10KHz and FM 100 and 200KHz). Its all built into the initial
setup of the Head Unit.
