Real Server
Hi,
I have a few large audio files that are lectures I'd like to make available as streaming Real audio on my website. My hosting service won't give me access to the Real Media server unless I upgrade to an advanced plan $34.95/month. Does anyone know of a Real Media hosting service for less than $5/month. I only need it for a couple of files. Thanks, Sarah |

All you need to do is to put a file up with a "ram" extension, which is a text file containing the url of the "rm" media file. If you link to the "ram" file on your web page, it will stream the rm file. e.g. upload a file "test.ram" which contains one line "http://www.yourwebsite.com/test.rm" If you make a link to "test.ram" on your page, when the user clicks it, the file "test.rm" will be streamed to them. Works for me anyway. I think you might have problems if too many people try to listen at one time. You can play the same game with Windows Media Player (which personally I prefer as I hate the way Realplayer messes around with the user's computer). For WMP you need to create a ".wax" file which contains the following text: ASX VERSION="3.0" ENTRY REF HREF="http://www.yourwebsite.com/test.wma" / /ENTRY /ASX The wma file will then be streamed to the user. -- Tim Mitchell |

"(which personally I prefer as I hate the way Realplayer messes around
with the user's computer)" The new Realplayer is not only easier to find, but they got rid of all the crap that was associated with the messing around you are referring to. I've got a load balanced (2 blade servers) RealServer 10 system and a RealServer 8 system, as well as the latest Windows Media Server streaming WM9 - and still prefer the audio quality to that of windows... spoken word through music. I can't explain it - it's just easier on my ears. I've been steaming real and testing the others since '97. Ozzy |
