Hey I just got my Zoom MRS802 standalone DAW today (cost $550) I've got plenty
of mics under $500. I'll let everyone know how it sounds.

One I forgot about the other day, though it's still over budget, is
the upcoming portable hard disk recorder from Fostex. But it's still
not a real product, so we don't know all we should about it other than
that it will be less expensive than the upcoming Sound Devices unit.
