Yamaha GO46 Firewire interface: Looking for information and opinions!!
Hi, All,
I am planning to purchase a small, good quality two-channel firewire audio interface for simple (one track at a time with no processing) home recording and occasional on-location stereo recording to a laptop. I am considering the Presonus Firebox and the Focusrite Saffire among others, but I am VERY interested in information about the Yamaha GO46. The GO46 looks to me to be just what I'm looking for (good quality, rugged, and simply laid out, and at a reasonable price), but I can find NO decent information about it on the web! The GO46 has been out for more than a year, but the only info I can find (including on the Yamaha websites!) consists of one PDF "brochure" and the original marketing press release. I did find an owners manual, but this focuses on installation of the drivers, not actual operation, and the specifications listed are not very detailed. The GO46 is available from all of the "usual" gear outlets, but other than the above press release and brochure, they offer no additional information. I can find no "user reviews" of the usual sort, and there is only ONE hit in Google after a Newsgroups search for GO46! I can't believe that after more than a year there is not more "buzz" about what looks to me to be a really nicely designed unit! Yamaha's other offerings seem popular, and there are user forums, etc. I can only conclude that: 1) The GO46 is so inferior in performance or design to similarly- priced units that no on will consider it. (Doubtful; there would at least be some "negative" buzz, declarations that it "Sucks!", etc.) 2) No one is aware of its existance, or poor marketing. (Again, doubtful, as the GO46 is listed on all of the same websites and on the same catalog pages as the Safire, the Firebox and the M-Boxes.) 3) The GO46 is "aimed" more at the "real" professional market, rather than the hoards of home, amature and semi-pro users (like me!). I am really interested in hearing from anyone who has used a GO46, or anyone with knowledge in how it stacks up againsed similar, but more popular units. Thanks for any opinions or advice! Ken |

Have you actually seen one yet? Maybe it hasn't actually shipped. But even if it has, Yamaha isn't the sort of company that most of us, both pro and hobbyist, look to for a straightforward audio interface. It may be perfectly fine, but that's just a little part of their business, unlike the other companies you mentioned. The question is, why would anyone buy that rather than a similar interface from M-Audio, TASCAM, Focusrite, or Presonus. The answer is that it might have one feature that the others don't have that's important to you. For example, the insert jacks are a nice touch, but only if you have something you want to insert. Otherwise, it's just another pair of switch contacts in the signal path to get dirty and noisy if you don't keep them clean. I see that it appears to have an optical digital output. Now I might be able to use that to feed the digital input of my Jukebox 3 if it can be used as an output from the mic preamps. But if it's just a playback output, I don't need it. Maybe you do. So assume, at least for now, that there's nothing wrong with the audio, and compare the functions and features. When you decide which one would work best for you in your particular working situation, then take a hard look at the audio to see if there's anything wrong with it that would keep you away. |

Ken I had a Yamaha i88x for a short while. I found it unreliable, frequently dropping out, and with a lousy GUI, IMO. I sold it ASAP. I've not heard much about any Yamaha interfaces - not even from Yamaha. I think they've missed the boat on this, so far. They certainly seem like a good company overall, tho. Maybe they'll get it together on the interface front. Mikey Nova Music Productions |

I have a GO46 - bought it last summer when they just came into the stores. I needed (well, wanted) a firewire audio interface and bought the Yamaha without doing a lot of research - I've always thought Yamaha kit was pretty good quality. It's supposed to have good quality pre's, can be powered by the firewire interface, individually switched phantom power for the mic inputs, well layed out etc. Comes with Cubase. I have had a problem with the interface with my Dell Inspiron laptop - I have to set the latency up fairly high before I could get rid of the random clicks that would occur. The Dell's CPU is dual core so maybe there's synchronization issues between them that causes the clicks. I've tried to sort it out but didn't spend a lot of time on it. (I can't get a new firewire card 'cause the dell doesn't support pcmcia.) The GO46 works peachy on my desktop machine - a P4 3.2 Gig singlecore. No latency issues at all and I have a 25 foot firewire cable which is outside of the firewire spec - no problems. The Yamaha drivers are fine (outside of the laptop issues but I attribute that to Dell). I use an RNP before the GO46 (only because I have one). If you are interested, I could be talked into creating a couple of audio clips that compare the GO46 pre's directly compared with an RNP - GO46 line input. I'm kind of curious about this myself but haven't taken the time to do it yet. -Doug |
