Maxtor 250 GB drives - are they a bad idea?
Powell a écrit :
In Scott’s case his predicament was neither financially or psychologically taxing, but an overaction due to youth, IMO. To youth ? LOL. You should have a look to the way that he is navigating on RAHE with the automatic pilot *ON*. As soon as you will be back you will explain me your definition of "youth" ok ? ;-) |

Maxtor 250 GB drives - are they a bad idea?

... You can buy whatever you like. But, if I am going to spend that kind of money on an external drive and I am going to make sure that it isn't a Maxtor brand and that it has a $3 fan in the case. Plain and simple. The cooler you keep your computer the longer it will live and the more reliable it will be. This is why my full tower case have 16 fans, and why I bought a small air compressor to keep them and everything else cleaned out. John 16 fans ??? That is more of a hover craft than a computer !! I have an Antec case and put a second fan so it blows directly across the hard drive cage. The drives only get slightly warm to the touch but it never occured to me to make a hovercraft out of a computer case !! -- Mike "mikey" Fields http://home.comcast.net/~mike.fields/ outgoing email scanned by Norton Antivirus ... is that good ? "Robert Morein" wrote: No, it's not. The Supreme Court hears, on the average, only 2% of the cases presented to it. Because of the extremely limited number of cases SOCUS can hear, the cases are chosen based upon the urgency of the constitutional issue involved. Unlike other courts that may apply in the appeals process, a hearing before the Supreme Court is not guaranteed by due process. Consequently, the Supreme Court DID NOT RULE on my case. Maxtor 250 GB drives - are they a bad idea?
"Robert Morein" wrote We've got to remember that Morein tried to sue his school in the Supreme Court of the United States in a failed attempt to get a PhD degree. This is one seriously and expensively bruised ego. As one who has invested substantial funds in attorney fees as a necessary expense of doing business I can appreciate Robert's disposition on the matter. I have respect for anyone who has been thought the financial commitment of litigation and psychological hardships they can cause. I am surprised at the kindly thoughts, but I accept the intention. So what, I’m not the bogeyman, Robert? As you note, Powell, this kind of experience changes a person. I would not say, however, that it damaged me. It did change me. "It did change me"... I’m legally a better games-man for the ware but at the expense of my innocence. From them (attorneys) I learned “Never give a sucker an even break or smarter up a champ - W.C Fields”... an egregious cross to bare. It is quite a natural thing that since I enjoy embarassing Arny, he would return the favor. I do not begrudge him the privilege. Yes, we all seem give him the attention (emotional) of which he is most needy, indeed. My graduate work was in the area of statistical systems theory. I have a specialist's interest in clarifying the understanding of the public as to the true meaning of MTBF. To quote Mark Twain again, "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics." BTW, I read that Moore’s Law, regarding nano technology, is facing a wall in about seven years. It seems that electrical circuits, in CPU possessors, can be made no narrower than two atoms wide. Perhaps that’s the stock/hobby investment you're looking for. HP is touting nano technology investors (stock). It also seems that much research is currently being invested in growing bacteria to create electrical circuits, by chemical recovery/conversion to copper atoms. I regret that one could be lead to believe that a disk drive could run 160 years, based upon the misinterpretation of a highly misleading term that has been ruthlessly exploited by marketing mavens to rook the public. Well, yes and no. In most business situations, for example, data storage needs will far outstrip long term hard drive capacity/longevity. That’s why computers are depreciated and business plans beyond three years are astrologically based. There are only a very few statistical distributions that are used for all these circumstances: Poisson, binomial, Gaussian, and a handful more. These can be used to predict failure rate for a handful of years, but nothing more. Yea, Ok. You spend a lot of your time living out of your head, Robert. But that's ok, I understand... wince . |

Maxtor 250 GB drives - are they a bad idea?
"Arny Krueger" wrote 16 fans ??? That is more of a hover craft than a computer !! If he pointed them all the same way... 32 fans would only be marginally better that one or two. In one of my PCs I’ve installed about one square foot of specialized acoustic foam inside. Also installed an external sound muffler on the power supply fan, all of which slow down the air flow, but only recorded an eight degree increase in internal PC temperature. This original poster is as prone as you are to poor thinking. I’m surprised you’re not touting water cooled PC package systems? BTW, I’ve used an external One Touch - 300 GB Maxtor HD for a year... not even a hiccup. I’m thinking about a passive (cooled) or power fan (muffler) only PC next time around. Do you think 2 - Xeon possessors could live happily in a hot-house? I’d hate to guess, so I’m asking for your advice, first )). I have an Antec case and put a second fan so it blows directly across the hard drive cage. Not a bad idea. Done so, many times. Why, the PC's internal framework is a heat sink, too. You’re wasteful, even at the 12 volt level, Arny . |

I saw a great cartoon of a woman lifting her leg up to the hot-air blower in a restroom, but somehow I doubt that that's the answer. |
