Does anyone know of a reasonable source for low-cost mono over-ear
headphones with a 3.5mm plugÉ

I have been asked to look into hearing assistance for a low-budget
event. I have a Nady wireless system that works okay (this is for
spoken word only), but it does not work with stereo headphones, and
the earbuds that come with it are a) a pain to clean and sanitize,
and b) earbuds, so they do not work well for folks with hearing aids.

I would rather not set up a loop, though it is one possibility; I
even have an old Soundmaster loop amp in storage. I also would rather
not set up an IR system, as the rental costs locally are rather high.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't, but you can get a mono-to-stereo adaptor for about a dollar.
The bad news is that this is a another thing to get lost. The good news
is that contact cement will glue them to the headphones.

but those are kind of clumsy. Still, I would look in the school AV market.

The Califone-SO 3068AV Switchable Stereo/Mono Headphones sell for
around $9.00 and they are fairly robust. Also the cushions are
replaceable.

You could connect the output of the Nady receiver to a neckloop. Headphones often don't work well with hearing aids. A neckloop is lightweight and discreet - can be worn under clothing if desired - and doesn't have hygiene issues.

Most appear to be terminated in stereo plugs but I don't see why they shouldn't be rewireable to a mono plug with a little experimentation.
