Default [?]Sourcing SONY DAT recorder 7-pin connector (and lead).

Hi,

SONY have recently discontinued the miniature 7-pin connector and
lead (to bare ends) that is used to connect accessories to the Remote
Digital I/O connector on the SONY TCD-D7 or TCD-D8 DAT recorders (SONY
Part Number 1-751-146-11).

My company produces a special intelligent dual remote controller for
SONY DAT recorders to start/stop and record simultaneously on two DAT
recorders from a radio or telephone source, and until recently we have
been regularly purchasing the leads from SONY as spares. When we tried
to order a further supply of 24 leads from SONY recently we were
informed that that particular lead was now obsolete and that there was
no alternative available. I find this very surprising, and MOST
inconvenient, since although these recorders are no longer advertised
they are still widely used by professionals in the UK and, no doubt,
elsewhere in the world.

Does anyone in this NG knows of any alternative supplier of the
miniature SONY 7-pin moulded plug and lead, or even just a non-moulded
7-pin plug to which we can connect our own lead? I guess that the plug
may be a unique SONY design but, since they seem to have discontinued
it, I'm hoping that someone else may be able to produce a replacement to
meet the continuing need for spares. FWIW, our interface is directly
wired to all of the seven of the pins in the connector - audio is sent
to the recorder via the wiring, not optically.

Any constructive suggestions will be most gratefully received.

Many thanks,

- David Chapman

God, I hate those things. I think that same connector is also used on
some of the Sony video cameras.

Did you hear about the new cure for AIDS? They're going to put a Sony
part number on it, and then nobody will be able to get it. This sort of
thing is very typical behaviour for Sony.

In the short term, you might try the Oade Brothers, who may have some
of the connectors in stock; they buy the Sony DAT cables as spares to
make up all sorts of adaptors. In the long term, your only solution
might be to get an Asian outsourcer to make you up some, which means
probably a minimum of five or ten thousand and throwing most away.

VERY many thanks for the speedy replies and the useful information. I
did contact Oade but they were unable to supply this simple lead, only
being able to offer the RKDA10Ps at $70.00 each. This cable is
unsuitable for our application.

I have now e-mailed Core Sound and am awaiting their reply.

Happy New Year to all readers of this NG from London, England.

ATB, and thanks again.

Hi,

It's me again. I thought my problem was solved after the suggestions
I've received following my posting BUT when I e-mailed Core Sound, they,
as well as Oade Brothers, have now said that they cannot supply either a
plug on its own, or a plug with lead.

So, my search for a suitable supplier must now continue. Any further
ideas from anyone?

TIA - Dave

You've already ruled out Len, but at one time at least, there was a
document on his site about how to make the plug with the epoxy-blob
method.

Hah! Mine has become MUCH more valuable!

No, sorry, Core was my only idea.

When Sony was making the DAT recorder for HHb they were using a Hirose
connector for the remote control. You might try www.hirose.com

Sadly, there is no connection. For one thing, the Hirose connector is
standard, reliable and rugged. The 7-pin thing on the DatWalkmen is
none of those.

I've now been told that there is a different but shorter cable for the
SONY SB-M1 that has a 7-pin connector to fit the TCD-D7/8 machines. The
7-pin connector can be opened up (unlike the moulded type) and all 7
pins re-wired as necessary. Can anyone in this NG confirm this?

If so, it appears that PartSolver in the US has stock of them and that
may be a cost-effective way forward.

Thanks again,

- Dave

Len's cable lives in a plush jewelry box here.

Yes. The other end goes into the SBM-1 through strain
relief and solders to the board.

I'd appreciate more info about that myself. I only need one
replacement and another for a project.
