Default Feeder cables to the snake

I've ordered the 100' Whirlwind snake. Now I need some individual feeders.
Please comment on the following brands. I want to avoid the "junk."

Pro-Co
Audio-Technica
Audix
Canare
CAD
Monster

You left out Belden as one of the "big" wire makers.

Personally, in order to avoid junk, I generally make my own cables
using the Neutrik connectors for microphones (low impedence) and if I
need TRS I use Switchcraft (also for unbalanced) as i do not like the
Neutrik phono jacks.

Pro Co makes decent cables. I have a few guitar and speaker types of
theirs, have had them for over ten years and they're still working.

Canare and Belden tend to be too pricey for me, which is why I build my
own. For the money, I can customize the length and know that they've
been built correctly.

That said, for snakes, i generally let someone else do the building.
Now THAT's a pain in the solder.

Belden goes into alot of decent cables. I was asking about manufactured
cables. Thanks for the opinions.

They should all be fine. Doubt than any sound any different at all,
especially over short distances. The star-quad ones may have extra
attenuation that will be come apparent at hundreds of KHz due to the extra
shunt capacitance, especially in longer lengths..

Buy a good roll of cable and put your own ends on.

Have some of their stuff, fine.

Audio-Technica
Audix
CAD

Like Mike Rivers said, these are probably OEM'd from some other
manufacturer.

Canare

Never had any of their prebuilt stuff, but it's my favorite wire to
make my own with.

Monster

Overpriced overmarketed junk.

Mogami is also very very good. Easier to work with than Canare for mic
cables because of the overwrap shield. Whirlwind themselves also make
decent cables. Stay away from Hosa.

What makes you think one cable is that much different from another ?

Google for star quad construction.

What makes you think one cable is that much different from another ? There are
some interesting differences in construction and that affect flexibilty for
example but I suspect that's probably not what you're thinking of. You can also
get some elaborate shields but you're going to fine with something 'standard'
I'm sure.

You've already been advised that one of the most important issues is the
*connector*. Most pros like Neutrik.

Many pros here use Markertek to supply their cables. In the UK I'd advise VDC.
These are companies that specialise in supplying the needs of pros and you don't
have to pay a boutique price either.

Add to your short list:

Blue - above avg. connecters and strain
relief - highly visible green cable sheathing
is easily seen (less likely stepped on).

Monster 500 - avg. connecters and strain relief
- heavy cable sheathing.

Mogami 2534. - avg. connecters and strain relief
- light cable sheathing

Cardas 2x24M - Thinking about it, waiting for an
impulse rationalization.

You've left out star quad wiring. It seems to have alot of industry support.
I'm talking to Markertek. They make up cables with Canare star quad wire and
Neutrik connectors. Select from many colors.

Considering the quantity I need, I'm going with

Has Canare star-quad, Neutriks.

Looks like good cable. I like the idea of buying cables in multiple
colors... I've always just used black, but having each length of cable
in a different cable sure would be quick.

Like I need more mic cables. Gads!

Bob, let us know what you think of them after you've used them a while.

If you can't tell the approximate lenght of a cable by just looking at it
all coiled up... ;-)

I have a set of 8 ables, identical lengths, and foamies to match. They are
hooked to faders that are marked with a strip of appropriately colored tape.
Makes it pretty easy to keep track of the vocalists when they start
wandering around the platform.

I'm under the impression that stepping on cables hastens the break-in
process with commensurate improvements in soundstaging and microdynamics.
;-)

Seriously, any cable that does poorly when stepped on is hoplessly useless.
IOW, avoiding stepping on cables is like avoiding getting wet when taking a
shower.

Sure, I can tell the difference between my six-footers and my
twenty-footers, it's the twenties and twenty-fives I sometimes don't
guess right the first time. :-)

I've used many systems in the past, from different colored electrical
tape to colored heat shrink. These days I've just been labeling them
with a sharpie! lol

Good system, that. Easy system to use when you don't know/can't
remember the names of the singers. This works great for festivals and
such, I bet.

My solution to that problem is to never buy 25' cables and cut all the 25
footers on hand down to 20'. ;-)

I imagine. In my case its working out well for "The Praise Team Of The

That'd work, I spose, but 25' works better for our overhead mics, 20'
ar better for miscellaneous, and the shorties work great for the rest
of the kit, the bass guitar, etc. I try and use the shortest cable
runs I can whenever possible.

Fair nuff!

Why not make your own? For $150 or so, I got 200 feet of Mogami cable
and XLR connectors for 10 20' cables from Redco.
