Default CD player to match Rotel RSP1066/RMB1075

Hi,

I have the above processor/power amp combination connected to Kef Q75
speakers. My current CD player is a rather old Marantz CD 63, and I'm
looking to upgrade. My wife has a thing for Cyrus, so the current favourite
is a Cyrus CD8, although we're waiting for the revised player due out in the
next month or so before we make any decision - also there is a hi-fi show in
October (Manchester, UK) which will give us the opportunity to listen to
much more that we could hear in one day at our local dealer.

Any suggestions as to what other CD players we should be auditioning hat go
well with Rotel kit - budget is around £1000-1500.

Thanks

Shim

Listen to the Arcam DV-79 for both CD and DVD-A...and you'll get DVD-V as an
extra.

Thanks for the reply. I've considered auditioning some of the high end DVD
players, but I'll be paying for hardware (and processing) I don't need - I
already have a DVD player - and I feel this will lead to compromises in
sound reproduction in other areas.

Shim

With this piece, it doesn't. That's the point.

What is wrong with your current CD player? Or DVD player used for CD,
for that matter?

It is always nice to buy new gear, but sometimes it could be good to
reflect why.

A Marantz CD 63 would serve as well as any, if only sound is your goal.
If the wife likes the looks of another box, better go with it, you have to
live with her.

Have you looked at the matching Rotel CD player, RCD-1072?

In what way would the Marantz would suffice? Are you saying that spending
extra on a new CD player is not worthwhile because the rest of the system
would constrain any possible benefit? Or are you saying that the Marantz
(now 10 years old) is a good as it gets?

What are you information/experience are you basing your statement on?

Also, it is both of us who would like to upgrade the CD player, my wife has
a liking for Cyrus based on previous hi-fi ownership, but the question was
'what other players to audition besides the Cyrus.'

Well, I remain to be convinced. I've had a look at the Arcam website and it
makes a big play of HDMI and improved picture quality, although it does
mention audiophile quality sound, it seems to relate this to DVD-A and
multi-channel music, neither of which interest me.

However, I'll add it to the list for audition, and see how it sounds myself.

What you are getting here is a shared, widespread belief among many on this
newsgroup that all decent CD players sound essentially the same, especially
those produced in the last 10-15 years. So your correspondent is operating
on the assumption that any perceived increase you get from a new CD player
is simply an illusion...that you and your wife would be kidding yourself. I
let it to you to judge the veracity of that assumption based on your own
experience.

Harry, I object to "widespread." Such reductionist views are
expressed here often, but there is no way to know how widely
they are held by those reading this newsgroup. Even a poll (if
one were held) would be hopelessly imprecise, if not biased,
by the small fraction reporting.

Always good advice. The purchaser is the one who will be
doing the listening -- and paying.

A case could be made that the view that all CD players sound
essentially the same is widespread among 'audiophiles' too --
the difference being, they think CD players sound *essentially*
inferior to analog playback.
