live sound reinforcement advice?
My impression from lurking sporadically is that r.a.p. is primarily devoted to studio audio. Is there a better ng for discussion of PA gear for live band performance? If not, I'm looking for advice on how to get the best value in upgraded PA speakers, power amps, etc. for my rock band, which plays small to medium clubs and wedding dance parties, with an occasional (small) outdoor gig. I'm upgrading from a couple of powered mixers (one for monitors, one for mains) and two Yamaha SM12e two-ways on stands. We mainly want the ability to get some fuller sound and to put more of the mix (e.g., drums) through the PA without running out of headroom. I'm thinking about the Mackie M1400i for the amp, since it's supposed to have good power (1400W bridged into two ohms) and low distortion for the price. It's probably way more power than we'll need for most gigs, but better that, I think, than too little. For mains, I'm hoping to find something reasonably inexpensive but decent quality and of commensurate power-handling ability. We've already got a powered sub with built-in active cross-over, so we're only looking for speakers to handle everything from roughly 100 Hz up. Last but not least, we think we probably need an inexpensive rackmount EQ between the mixer and the power amp ... suggestions? For reference, we're a semi-pro band that plays paid gigs only once or twice a month, on average, so our budget is tight -- amp plus main speakers (new or used) will hopefully come in under $1000 or so with careful bargain hunting. Reasonable portability is also important, as everything has to be dragged up and down basement stairs for every gig. - Grant |
