Default Philco 79

Does anyone have a schematic for a 1939 Philco model 79 table radio?
That I could "borrow"? The power tube is a 50L6, rectifier was a
50Y6G, but a 50X6 has been swapped in. Is there a difference? They are
both loctal tubes, I believe.
Another question. These tubes are full wave rectifier/doublers. Does
that mean you can feed say 100v into each cathode and get 200v's out
at the plates?
Is that too many questions?

Hi RATs!

www.tubesandmore.com

Get their free catalog. The have the schematic and books to teach the basics.
There is a bit more to cover than can be done in chat room

Happy Ears!

Probably someone at rec.antiques.radio+phono could help you out with
this. There are also online schematics resources, For instance,
http://oldtech.net/Philco.html (sorry, yours isn't here though). But a
little time spent Googling would probably turn it up.

If you find it, you can *have* it!

50Y6G, but a 50X6 has been swapped in. Is there a difference? They are

Identical electrically, but very different pinout. *Not* directly
interchangeable.

That being said, someone might have rewired the socket for 50X6
somewhere along the line. If that's the case, you can't go back to 50Y6
unless you change it back.

Another question. These tubes are full wave rectifier/doublers. Does
that mean you can feed say 100v into each cathode and get 200v's out
at the plates?

No. The tubes are merely dual diodes with independant cathodes. The most
common *application* for them is in voltage doubler *circuits*. It's the
circuit itself that does the voltage doubling, not the tube itself.

Again, Google is your friend. Keyword: "voltage doubler"

Is that too many questions?

Nope. People here love questions. ;-)

Cheers,
Fred

Try the following:
http://www.nostalgiaair.org/index.htm to download a scanned schematic.
Resolution might be a problem.

http://www.eskimo.com/~p0lez1/beitman/beitmanhome.htm To down load the
beitmans manuals in DJVU format and a plug in to use them.
