Default mac software for changing average dB level?

i am not a sound person so i don't really know what i am talking
about...
but i was instructed to make sure that the average dB level fo a piece
of audio (in aiff format) was at -12 dB.
i am using a macintosh and am wondering if there is a piece of sofware
which would allow me to figure out my current average dB level and
alter the dB level to -12 if necessary.
thank you for any input.
i have audacity and bias peak currently, though i know how to use
neither. but i am hoping one of these programs might do the trick.
thank you again.
