Just curious how the small to medium project studio market is out there.
Deader'n dirt in my neck of the woods (not that dirt is dead, mind you.
My wife would kill me for saying that g). I'm in Oregon.

I attribute the continuing stinkiness off the recording studio "industry"
to an oversupply of the service and lack of demand, simultaneously. Bad
juju.

Any comments?

I had a little downturn a couple of months ago and it scared me a little so I
began to advertise all my services (guitar lessons, studio consultation,
gigging etc). Now things have picked back up but not quite like they were a
year or two ago. Over the years I have tried to carve a niche for myself by
supplying better than project studio results at a project studio price. I treat
every session as if the client is going to call all their friends and tell them
about the experience. I dont think it takes much bad press to harm your
business. Its too much of a buyer's market to do anything less than outstanding
work.

Your email looks like you're in or near Eugene, which is where I
live. Sorry to hear business is slow, but this is a very tough town to
make a living in in this field. I like living here, but realized early
on that if I wanted to get paid, I was gonna have to do some driving.
Have you done anything I could get a hold of and hear (local bands,
etc)? What sort of music so you specialize in? Big room, gear,
tape/Alsihad/etc? I only ask because I know most of the musicians in
the town, not that my reference is worth squat, but if any of them ask
"hey, do you know anybody who doesn't charge $75 an hour who does great
work", maybe I'll have a name for them.
