Default Digital or Analog mixer!??!

I'm looking at getting a Yamaha 01V w/ adat card. But I'm wondering if I
need a digital mixer at all. What greater benefit do digital mixers have
over analog setups (apart from the obvious)? Any other model
recommendations, either analog or digital? Any help's appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff.

Go and mix on some consoles.

Pick the one that feels the best to you.

I find most of the digital consoles very irritating. They have a lot more
nifty functions per channel, but you have to page through goddamn menus to
get to them rather than just reaching for a knob. So it depends on what you
want to do.

i used to use an old soundcraft series 1s, for anyone who knows what they're
like (ancient, big, tanks with a decent amount of play). as for flipping
through pages to alter eq's and such, i dont think i'd mind that...for me
that's the only noticeable drawback with mid-end digital mixers: no
knob-controlled eq. anything other than this though? cheers.

Perhaps a more significant question is why do you need an external mixer at
all?

Given the flexibility and power of mixing on a computer, the only use I see
for external mixers is for sound reinforcement and monitoring. Oh, and they
can be a useful way to get a lot of mic preamps for a relatively low price.

To me, if you can't work 90% of the time with your eyes closed, you might
just as well be using a mouse because you're mixing with your eyes rather
than with your ears.

my sound card is decent, and able to operate w/ optical ins and outs, but
its preamp is mediocre, and i don't necessarily want to permanently record
and mix on my computer, that just seems the easiest for me right now. that
being said, i doubt i'll have a computer in the studio when i actually
record. the 01V seems to have enough package in a small size that i would
get some versatility out of it. correct me if i'm wrong.

I have a Spirit 328 and am very happy with it. Except for the failing power
supply (it likes to randomly reboot) it is very easy to use, even in a live
situation. All the the knobs are where you need them and accessible with a
click of a button. Check it out at the Soundcraft site.

Just curious. What are you recording on? Your original post didn't say.

that i don't know...if i move my studio area to a new place, then it'll be
directly to my computer, if not, then likely to somethin basic (and possibly
analog): tape deck, MD, etc.

Ahhhh - yes - so you actually *mix* as opposed to ( expletive deleted ) with the
sound. A man after my own heart. Hmmm does that sound quite right ?

So it depends on what you
want to do.

Yup.

What is analogue sound?
What is digital sound?

Why not instead worry if it sounds _good_ or not?
