Default Technics SB-440 speakers - any info?

Hi,

I've already asked this question on uk.rec.audio but I suspect these
speakers were more common in the US.

Does anyone know anything about Technics speakers model SB-440? I picked up
a pair recently and think they sound quite good driven by my Quad IIs.

They are big and heavy (they weigh about 30lbs each) but surprisingly
sensitive. I guess they were built in the 1980s. Each speaker has a horn
tweeter, what look like two small mid-range units behind a rectangular
cover, and a large woofer (10 inch or more). I found a picture on:

http://www.vintagetechnics.com/loudspeakers/sb440.htm

but even that site has no technical details. The person I bought them from
had bought them with a collection of Technics hifi kit or I might have
considered them to be part of a PA system.

On some tracks (especially with brash trumpets) I almost prefer the sound to
my newly acquired ESL57s. I guess its the horn tweeters giving the trumpets
that raw edge.

Thanks for any info.

Regards,

John Smith.
