It's very good but not up to JBL standards : the recone is done using generic parts. The good side is that Ted Weber does an excellent job at refurbishing the motor, including a demag/remag - something vintage Alnico speakers really need if they have been pushed hard. JBL still supplies - at a stratospheric price - recone kits for the D120F series, models C8RE120 (8-ohm) and C16RE120 (16-ohm). Alas, they aren't identical to the originals and transform a D120F into a K120 mongrel (cloth vs. paper surround, kapton vs. paper VC, etc.). Really nice in the end, but different. For the real deal.... The K series JBL assembly is the *best* for electric guitar or bass. Maybe try Orange County? http://www.speakerrepair.com/OCSAuth.html They are JBL factory authorized and have a decent reputation. Not cheap. |

Sorry to top post, but one thing people are missing in the REAL D120/K120/FFF issue, that unless I'm too stoned, the REAL OLD FART 120's had a 3" voice coil. Folks love the 2" (or less) UK stuff, but what MADE that OFDays(.com) 120 WAS the 3" VC. The last real folks at Standel tried..REALLY TRIED..BIG TIME TRIED..to get JBL to wake the flock up and do it right. WHAT IS EVERYBODY'S PROBLEM?? There is so much real time, no BS history/mojo/fantasy that would sell and BLOW AWAY THE DOORS OF THE IMPORTERs, it's like money in the bank. Celestion tried it with the POWERCELL speaker that Marshall had all rights to, but Marshall (Rose Morris) tried to replace a 4 12 cab with a ONE 12 weird shaped/horned cab. It did not work. Sad, the speaker was flocking killer. I bought a ton of them off Angela's for $30 ea, only have a few. Weber has a recone kit for them. Clips great.. Made the JBL K120 look like a cheap Utah out of Radio shack.. JJTj On Thu, 24 May 2007 06:41:04 -0400, Rich Koerner wrote: The K series JBL assembly is the *best* for electric guitar or bass. Hmmm. I wouldn't be that affirmative. the K series are excellent if you want to play very clean and reach very high SPL's. OTOH, a typical Twin Reverb fitted with a pair of K120 is heavier than a dead cow.. The D series sound IMO smoother with better pick/attack response, handle less power (but are slightly more efficient because of their lighter cones) and begin to distort gracefully at more decent levels. Other speakers can sound really good, and better match amps/playing styles. For instance a K120 in a 5E3 Deluxe doesn't sound half as good as a real (read Chicago, not the Italian so-called re-editions) Jensen P12Q or P12R - cone breakup and speaker disto is an important part of the global sound here. Anyway, most vintage JBL speakers are true classics, with a build quality and sound quality putting to shame their contemporary " equivalents". Some combinations are pure magic, such as a D123 in a Deluxe Reverb - not for headbangers of course, or, classically, a D130F in a Vibroverb. |

A disgruntled customer with a legitimate gripe is one thing. An anonymous troll is entirely else. I would not know Ted Weber from the next lamp-post, but I do know that I would believe a 'real' lamp-post over an anonymous you at this moment. You pays you money, you takes you chances. JBL did it their way, with heavier cones and oversized motors, thus reaching similar efficiency and offering a much better power handling. That was what made the Altec 12"'s so great. overkill mounts, and 3" VC (I believe, I think later ones )non gray) were more then 3". Could be wrong. I *DO* know, I have a SVT stack with 2/4-`12' "FACTORY" Altec V4 cabs dat flocking KILL for overall sound volume, and clip point needed. I will say,the best combo amp I ever heard was a BF TWin with JBL anything's. J. Winter packed SF Twins with Altec. JK of the Airplane used 120s. We spoke in KEENE NH during the multi tour, JA/JS/Hot Tuna/Starship horror. He ends the last song, I was behind the amp, dumb ?? I asked was: "..JBL's. ever try Altec's..?..". Mo fool me. JK stands there, 355 in hand, describing the "..flap bottom.." the jBL's had that any Altec wanted. .."..we have a garage of Altecs. No bottom flap.." Bass player just nods..and agrees.. I listen to such people..I've met them all... ....names then when dropped, crack the ground... Those who have dealt with the Celestion PowerCell, know it just didn't make QC enough. Awesome idea..a UK/JBL.. I know of 12" PC's doing dog shows as we speak. In the late '50s a typical Jensen 12" weighted 4 lbs and accepted say 20 real watts, a typical JBM weighted 16 lbs and accepted around 60 real watts. Sad, the [Powercell] speaker was flocking killer. Hmm. I wasn't impressed by the Powercell series, or Marshall amps/cabs from that period for that matter. Amps/cab's sucked that time, yes, it was the end of Rose Morris and DB and all that rot. RM really tried to retain the Marshall MoJo. Korg failed then. At Pr1mo, we got 5 AC30's with Powercells that went to some 'loser' (as the brass at Pr1mo said ) named MC...? He had a few hits chuckle) and loved em. Celestion just couldn't sustain the demand. and RM was 180 days behind..hehehehe Made the JBL K120 look like a cheap Utah out of Radio shack.. ...it really did, a 1 12" guitar PC was awesome in a combo. Ahem. The K120 is much better built, and don't forget that Utah has produced some outstanding speakers in the '50s - some of their red alnicos are every bit as good as their Jensen counterparts and the Celesta line was really top notch. Yes, JBLs were better built, and that is why the RM era Marshall's with da PowerCell's never made it. Speakers weren't built well, buyer was broke, 70% ot the PowerCell's coming to the USA were 'bass' voiced units..NOT guitar. ...wrong item imported badly to the wrong buyers with $$$$$. Today, those 1-12" PowerCell Marshall cabs are worth $1k USD. Even without the odd mounting holes of the PowerCell's. Yup...I made good $$$ making Twin amp frontbaffels. JJTj I left Oklahoma drivin' in a Pontiac Just about to lose my mind I was goin' on to Arizona, maybe on to California Where all the people live so fine My baby said I was crazy, my momma called me lazy I was goin' to show 'em all this time 'Cause you know I ain't no fool an' I don't need no more schoolin' I was born to just walk the line Livin' on Tulsa time Livin' on Tulsa time Well you know I've been through it When I set my watch back to it Livin' on Tulsa time Well there I was in Hollywood wishin' I was doin' good Talkin' on the telephone line But they don't need me in the movies and nobody sings my songs Guess I'm just wastin' time Well then I got to thinkin', man I'm really sinkin' And I really had a flash this time I had no business leavin' and nobody would be grievin' If I went on back to Tulsa time Livin' on Tulsa time Livin' on Tulsa time Gonna set my watch back to it Cause you know I've been through it Livin' on Tulsa time |

Their 12A series are some of the best ever, sounding very close to the Jensen originals (and miles above the Italian re-editions), their Celestion-style series are excellent - even if the custom Scumback series from Southbay Ampworks are better. OK the el cheapo Signature series use generic parts and are so-so voiced, but, heck, you can forgive a lot when it comes to 12" Alnico drivers selling for USD 45.00 a pop. You can pay nearly the same for a friggin' Jensen Italy bell cover... his amp kits are made from cheap Chinese parts Time for a wake up call : most parts are manufactured in China nowadays. Ted prices very fairly his amp kits : a 5E3 kit costs USD 490,00 (including a Sig 12" speaker). It's a decent piece of gear which can easily be upgraded, for instance by replacing the stock output xformer with a MercMag or any other "boutique" model. Nothing fancy here. A high quality 5E3 kit, such as the Mission Tweedy Deluxe retails for USD 659.95. Cab finish is excellent, the chassis is better built, all components are a notch or two above what Weber ships, full documentation is accessible, etc. It's an excellent kit, but it costs 35 % more. and he's a lying sack of **** to boot. I don't know what your problem is with Ted Weber, but I've always found him very responsive, honest and straightforward. Really, FWIW, I agree. One time my small parts (resistors, caps, switches, etc) came with out washers for the pots. I emailed him 6 weeks later because I didn't get around to checking the order until I stared building. He put them in the mail and I had them in 3 days, no questions asked. As for the kits, I don't think he makes an attempt to hide the fact that his stuff is "economy" level. Still, my impression is that you get a decent sounding amp. If someone has a beef with a vendor, he ought to state the facts, not hide behind an alias and implicate the offender with inuendo. The facts will speak for themselves. |
