Default good headphones for ambient, electronic and rock music

i am looking for good headphones for ambient, electronic and rock music
(not the most expensive ones and also not cheap ones)

the priority for me is good sound quality, good bass, clear sound, space

the source of sound is iPOD (mainly mp3s =192kbit and apple lossless
format), but I am not looking for portable phones, but for use at home only.

(3 years ago I bought a model of Sennheiser headphones which they were good,
but for acoustic and classical music and not too good for ambient,
electronic and rock...this is why i am trying now to find out which model
exactly is good for the ambient, electronic and rock (not only Sennheiser))

Search RAO for recent comments on "Etymotics" "Sennheiser" etc. I'd
think good headphones would work for all genres, but you may be looking
for something that exaggerates the boom and thump factor. If so, you're
in luck because many cheaper 'phones have this quality!

Stephen, who finds Grado SR80s good for classical, but fatiguing for
rock.

I'd recommend the Grado SR60 or SR80.

(no, I'm not affiliated with Grado)

What exactly is ambient music, and how does it differ from acoustic and
classical music.

Any of the titanium diaphram models from Koss or Radio Shack are excellent
for this purpose.
Also, the larger Sony closed-ear, such as the MDR-V600.

Limited dynamic range, but with wide spectral content. Spectral content need
not resemble music produced by conventional instruments. For music of this
type that has a synthetic origin, there is no actual acoustic reference;
hence it may be enjoyed by less accurate but wider range reproducers.

I know which companies make good headphones, but the problem is that
they are not always good for the kind of music I usually listen to.
E.g. I have bought Sennheiser once. The headphones were
great..........for acoustic and classical music , but not so good for
ambient, electronic and rock.

this is why i am trying now to find out which model exactly is good
for the kinds of music like ambient, electronic and rock.

the source of sound will most often be IPOD (portable Mp3 player)

Two very widely-respected and different sounding headphones:

Sennheiser HD 580/600/650
Sony MDR 7506

Two less dissimilar but good-sounding earphones:

Shure E3C
Futuresonics

I am quite partial to Stax, especially when driven by aftermarket
purpose designed electronics. The circuit published in Glass Audio some
time back, which I never built but which I have auditioned as built by
two Stax-loving friends, is especially excellent. I do not listen
enough to headphones to justify owning a Stax, and for what little I do
I need high isolation, which Stax aren't.

It's not a given which are the better-sounding headphones, the higher end
Sennheisers, or the Stax.

The Sennheisers are probably fine units, i just don't have much
experience with them.

This is for iPOD only and at home.
My final choice is Grado SR-80. They are open headphones and not so
expensive as Sennheiser at similar sound quality.
I have them already - they sound great! Could be more comfortable , but I
am already getting used to them.

Thank you all for your help!
