Default DISTRESSOR Knob Noise

Has anyone else encountered this?
All of our Distressors seem to be doing this intermittently.

When adjusting the the knobs, there's a breaking up crackle that
happens.
Dirty knobs I suppose?

Thanks!

Probably. Give it a squirt of cailube. It'll go away. If it comes back,
look for leaky caps.

A dirty potentiometer is often not so much dirt or debris, but rather silver
sulfide that has developed on the wiper plating. You may be able to effect a
relatively long lasting repair if the pots can be disassembled and using a
pencil eraser to carefully removed the black, sulfide layer from the wiper.
Be careful not to use too much abrasion though, as you may completely remove
the plating and the pot will become noisy again very quickly and will be
pretty much incurable after that.

The easy, albeit tedious fix is to wear the silver sulfide down slightly by
exercising the pot back and forth, say a thousand times, and then spray into
it with an appropriate cleaner, e.g. Caig D5.

Even better would be to replace the potentiometer.

If the remedies above don't work, you can look for direct current on the
wiper of the potentiometer, which could get into the circuit by way of a
leaky transistor or a leaky capacitor. Though less common than silver
sulfide, DC on pot wipers can cause really loud and annoying static that, on
some equipment, may even present transient voltage levels high enough to
damage successive stages of the circuit. To check for this, simply put a DC
volt meter or if your like me, your trusty digital scope on the circuit to
see what's going on.

Good luck~!
